The Little Adventure

Mila was swinging her legs over the edge of the playground bench when she felt the soft weight of her teddy’s ear slip against her palm. She looked down. Her teddy - Teddy Taffy, with a stitched-on smile and one button eye that always caught the light - was not there.

“Mama?” Mila called, her voice quick and thin. The park smelled like warm grass and sunscreen, and the swings squeaked like they were laughing at something.

Mila patted her pockets. No teddy. She checked the bench cushion again, pressing her fingers into the faded fabric. The playground was busy with families and bright hats, but Teddy Taffy was nowhere in sight.

“He was right here,” Mila said to herself, trying to sound brave. She stood up and held her breath for a second, then let it out slowly. The ground under her sneakers was sandy and dry, not sticky, and she could still remember the last place she’d felt Teddy Taffy - near her feet on the bench.

Across the sandbox, a little boy was digging with a yellow shovel. Near the slide, a woman in a green shirt waved to someone. Mila turned in a careful circle, scanning the ground the way she did when she dropped a sock and wanted to find it before it ran away.

Then she saw something that made her hope pop back up like a bubble: a faint trail of tiny marks in the dirt, leading away from the bench and toward the muddy path that ran along the edge of Sunshine Park.

Mila hurried after it, her sneakers scraping softly over sand. “Okay, Teddy,” she whispered. “We’re finding you.”

The muddy path was darker than the playground and smelled earthy, like wet leaves. The air felt cooler there, and her toes tingled inside her shoes as she stepped closer. She followed the marks until they got close to a puddle that spread like a shiny coin in the grass.

The puddle was bigger than Mila expected. It reflected the sky and the top of the trees, and its surface shimmered with tiny ripples from the breeze. But the dirt around it looked churned up, as if something had stepped in and then moved again.

Mila knelt and leaned in. She could see the edge of the puddle where the mud looked thick and glossy, and right there - near the puddle’s rim - were paw prints.

They weren’t big like a dog’s paw from the storybooks. They looked more like a small animal had walked close by, leaving prints like little half-moons. Mila traced one carefully with her fingertip, then pulled her hand back when the mud smeared a little.

“Paw prints,” she said, proud and worried at the same time. “So Teddy went this way!”

A sound behind her made her jump. “Are you looking for something?” a voice asked.

Mila turned. A man with a park badge on his shirt stood a few steps away, watching gently. He had a small cart with a broom and a stack of flyers. His expression was kind, like he had time.

“My teddy,” Mila said. She held her hands out, palms up, showing she didn’t have it. “Teddy Taffy. He’s missing. I found paw prints near the puddle, and I think they go on.”

The man crouched beside her without being too close. “Paw prints near the mud mean something came through,” he said. “Sometimes little cats or squirrels hop around and then go back to dry places.”

Mila nodded, even though she didn’t know which animal it was. “Teddy doesn’t run fast,” she said. “But maybe someone picked him up and carried him, and then he fell near the puddle.”

The man tilted his head. “That’s a smart guess.” He pointed to where the paw prints faded. “Do you see where they go?”

Mila looked again. The prints near the puddle were clear - then, a few inches farther, the mud got darker and softer, and the trail disappeared into the puddle’s edge like it was swallowed by the shine.

“I can’t tell,” Mila said. Her voice wobbled. “Which way did Teddy go? I don’t want to step in the wrong place.”

The man smiled as if her worries made sense. “You don’t have to rush. Let’s look together.” He shifted his cart aside, and the wheels made a soft crunch. “Tell me where you last saw Teddy.”

Mila thought hard. She remembered the bench, the sun on her cheeks, the way Teddy’s button eye had looked like a tiny star. “Right there,” she said, pointing back toward the playground. “He was on the bench. Then I - ” She searched for the moment. “I stood up to look at the slide, and when I came back, he was gone.”

The man nodded again. “Then the trail you found is our best clue.” He pointed at the dry grass just past the puddle. “The prints might be on the other side where the ground stays firmer.”

Mila stood carefully. Her knees felt dusty. She looked for the paw prints beyond the puddle, but the mud made the ground look slippery and confusing.

“I can try,” Mila said, even though she didn’t like the way her stomach felt like it was full of fluttering butterflies. “But I don’t want my shoes to get too muddy.”

“You can step around,” the man said. “We’ll keep to the dry path as much as we can.”

Mila took a small step, then another, testing the ground....
