Dangerous Love In The Dark

Metal screams when the other car hits her - an ugly, high grind that turns the night air into something sharp. Mara’s steering wheel jerks against her hands, then her body follows, thrown sideways as the world tilts into red brake lights and splintering glass. The impact doesn’t just rattle her bones; it steals her breath, drags it out of her like she’s drowning on dry land.

Her windshield collapses in a spray of grit and rain-cold shards. Something hot slides down her temple - blood, slick and warm - into her eyebrow, into her eye. She blinks hard, trying to see through it, and the headlights across the service road smear into streaks. The car is still running, but the engine sounds wrong, a choking animal. Mara tries to reach for her phone in the cup holder and her fingers come away slick, then numb.

“Don’t move,” a voice says from the dark, close enough that she can feel the breath behind it.

She doesn’t recognize the voice. She recognizes fear instead - her own, a frantic animal clawing at her ribs. Mara forces herself to look for the threat. A second set of headlights cuts across the wet asphalt, angled toward her like a spotlight. The light catches a figure stepping out onto the abandoned lot beside the service road. Another man lingers near a battered sedan, too still, too certain.

Mara’s mouth opens. No sound comes out at first. When it does, it’s thin. “I was hit.”

The man near her car doesn’t hurry. He walks with the calm of someone who’s already decided how the story ends. “You’re bleeding.”

“I know,” she snaps, then winces as pain flares along her ribs where the seatbelt has bitten. She shifts, trying to get her door open. The handle feels jammed. Her car is half-sunk in rainwater, half-sunk in the aftermath of the crash.

The other figure - taller, broader shoulders - raises something in his hand. Not a gun that glints, not anything she can name cleanly in the chaos. Just a hard shape with a dull finish, aimed at her windshield like a promise.

Mara freezes, heart slamming so hard it makes her vision pulse. She tastes blood where it has pooled at the back of her throat. “What do you want?”

“Your cooperation,” the calm man says, as if they’re negotiating a parking dispute. “Get out.”

She laughs once, breathless and wrong. “I’m not - ”

A sharp crack cuts through the night. Glass pops again somewhere inside the car, a fresh burst. The sound isn’t random. It’s a warning.

Mara’s hands shake as she fumbles for the door latch with her left, her right pressed to her ribs. When the latch finally gives, the door groans open just enough for cold air to slap her face. The service road is a thin strip of pavement bordered by weeds and a chain-link fence that sags like it’s tired of holding anything back. Beyond it, the abandoned lot sits in scattered shadows - broken pallets, a rusted sign, a concrete slab with oil stains like old bruises.

She slips out onto the wet ground, knees buckling. For a second she almost goes down, but she catches herself on her door frame. The pain in her ribs is a hot twist. The blood on her temple makes her vision swim. She wipes at it with the back of her wrist and it smears, thickening the mess.

“Back,” the broad man says, and the word lands with the weight of a command.

Mara takes a step anyway - toward the fence, toward the chain-link where she could potentially disappear into weeds if she had to. She’s not brave. She’s just desperate for distance from those men.

The calm man’s gaze flicks to her car, then her attention snaps to his movement. He’s watching her phone. Watching her access. Watching her as if he can already see what she might do with it.

Her stomach tightens. She hadn’t just survived the hit - she’d survived the plan.

A car door slams in the distance. Tires crunch on gravel. Mara’s head turns, hopeful for a third set of headlights - someone else coming, someone else helping. But the sound is too controlled, too purposeful. The lane behind her fills with the low rumble of an engine that doesn’t sound like a stranger lost on the wrong road. It sounds like an appointment.

The calm man steps closer. “Don’t make it harder.”

Mara’s breath goes ragged. “You’re the ones who hit me.”

The calm man tilts his head, as if considering whether she’s worth the trouble of lying to. “People who hit you don’t stick around to talk.”

Her pulse stutters. The broad man shifts his grip on the hard shape in his hand, and she realizes then - too late - that it isn’t a gun. It’s a stun baton, the kind that can drop a person without leaving a dramatic mess. The kind that can make someone unconscious long enough to erase them.

Mara’s body goes cold. She looks down at her hands. Blood. Mud. Shaking. She needs to move before it’s too late.

She takes a step toward the fence again, forcing her legs to cooperate. Pain flares. She grits her teeth and keeps going. The chain-link is slick with rain....
