Romance After The Dead Rise

The lockdown alarms had started as a thin, angry whine and then turned into a roar that made the air itself feel brittle. Mara Delaney kept her palm pressed to the brick beside the main stairwell, steadying herself as she slipped down the ridgeview high hallway - out of sight of the front office doors, out of range of the security cameras that still blinked red like indifferent eyes. The smell of wet wool and floor cleaner clung to everything, but it was fighting with the metallic stink that had seeped in after the dead started rising. Mara’s throat hurt from holding her breath too long.

She wasn’t trying to survive the hallway. She was trying to reach it.

The science wing was only a few corridors away, and she needed to get there before the lockdown worsened - before teachers gave up on hiding kids and started pulling doors shut with their whole bodies. Before the zombies learned the building had a second heartbeat. And before her crush disappeared behind whatever version of chaos the universe served next. Theo Alvarez had last been seen near the science-wing stairwell, moving with the kind of quiet urgency that made Mara’s chest ache even when her mind told her not to hope.

She turned a corner and nearly collided with a student crouched behind a trophy case. The kid’s eyes were wide and shiny, mouth clamped shut like sound was the thing that would get them killed. Mara lifted one finger to her lips and slid past, careful not to bump the glass. The trophy case rattled anyway - one soft, ugly click - and her stomach tightened like a fist.

From somewhere farther down the hallway came a dull thud, then another, like something heavy testing the lock on a classroom door. The alarm kept screaming. Mara moved faster, her sneakers whispering over scuffed tile, and she forced herself not to look back at the stairwell. If she looked, she’d decide she was safer staying hidden.

She couldn’t.

Theo was the only reason her feet kept choosing forward.

A row of lockers lined the corridor, half-open like mouths that had forgotten how to close. Mara flattened herself along the wall where the overhead lights flickered, casting her in harsh pulses of shadow. She could see the science-wing entrance farther ahead - just a slice of hallway framed by a doorway with a green EXIT sign that still glowed, even though the dead didn’t care about signs.

Theo’s last text - two hours ago, when the world still had rules - had been a single sentence: Meet me before they lock the science doors for good.

She’d read it three times and then stared at her phone until the screen went dark, terrified that wanting him would make her reckless. But wanting him was already making her reckless. The air tasted like dust and fear. Her hands were cold inside her sleeves.

Another thud echoed, closer now. Mara’s heart started to pound in a way that didn’t feel like adrenaline so much as a warning. She reached the science-wing corridor and paused, listening.

Voices. Not the alarm. Human voices, muffled by distance and panic.

“Mara?” a familiar voice said, strained like it had been pulled from somewhere deeper than breath.

She turned too quickly and almost lost her balance. Theo stepped out from behind a bulletin board where someone had pinned up a poster about lab safety - now smeared with fingerprints and old tears. His hair was a mess, his school hoodie damp at the shoulders, and there was a thin cut on his cheek that looked fresh enough to still ache. He held his arm out, palm up, not touching her yet, like he was asking permission without knowing if she’d give it.

Mara’s relief came like heat - fast and dangerous. “You’re here,” she whispered, and hated how much it sounded like a plea.

His eyes flicked past her shoulder, taking in the hallway behind her, the red glow of the alarm, the way she’d chosen the wall instead of the open space. He exhaled once, sharp. “I tried to get to you sooner. But the main hallway - ” He cut himself off, jaw tightening. “They’re pushing people into the classrooms. Someone said science wing was safer, but it’s not. Not if they breach.”

Mara’s gaze snapped to the science-wing door. The handle had been turned and then turned back, like whoever tried it couldn’t decide if they deserved to be trapped. The metal trembled under a series of heavy impacts that didn’t sound like doors being shoved by hands.

Theo followed her look. His shoulders rose and fell, and she saw the decision happening before he spoke it. “We don’t have much time.”

Her mouth went dry. “Theo…” She tried to say something brave, something useful. What came out was his name again, like it could hold the world in place.

He stepped closer, slow. The hallway light caught the bruise forming under one eye. “You came anyway.”

Mara swallowed. “I didn’t know if you would - ” She couldn’t finish the sentence: I didn’t know if you’d still be alive when I got there. The thought felt like stepping too close to the edge of a roof.
