“Hurry up, Omagara!” a voice snaps from the edge of the arena. A chaperone juts a clipboard toward him like paper can measure destiny. “Evaluation participants are moving in five.”

Kaito doesn’t slow. He twists his wrist, drawing a thin line of chakra across his palm, watching it shimmer - blue-white, controlled, too clean for a kid who’s always charging first. The Byakugan in him flares under his skin, not fully visible yet, just enough to feel the world sharpen at the edges. Kaito grins at her like he can’t help it. “I’m not reckless. I’m fast.”

Jasmine’s mouth curves. She glances between them, and the air between the three of them feels crowded even when it’s empty. “Both of you stop talking like the evaluation is a battlefield.”

Hikaru’s eyes flick to her, then back to Kaito. “It is. Everything here is.”

Kaito takes a step closer to Jasmine, lowering his voice so it’s only for her. “If I win, they have to listen.”

Her lashes flutter. She doesn’t look away. “They’ll listen. But they won’t just listen to your victory. They’ll listen to what you do when it costs you something.”

Kaito’s grin falters - only for a heartbeat - because he can feel that truth like a bruise beneath his ribs. He wants to tell her he won’t let anything cost him. He wants to tell her he’ll protect her, protect Hikaru too, protect the village so hard it can’t break.
