High Five And Buzzby

High Five padded over a floor that crunched softly like sugar snow under his feet. The glittery frozen cave sparkled above him, too - icicles hanging like tiny glass bells that clinked when the air moved. Cool misty breath puffed from his nose, and every time he exhaled, the sparkles seemed to shimmer brighter, as if the cave liked his curiosity.

“Buzzby!” High Five called, careful to keep his voice gentle so it wouldn’t echo too loudly. He leaned forward, peering at a wall covered in icy swirls. Some swirls looked like ribbons, and some looked like frost drawn by a careful hand. The cave smelled clean and cold, like winter air after a snowfall.

From his shoulder, buzzby hovered and bobbed, her wings making a soft whirr. “I’m right here,” she said, and her voice sounded light, like a drop of water landing on ice. “This place is shiny. I think your toes will find lots to explore.”

High Five’s toes did want to explore. They tingled with excitement as he tried to take one more step, then another, across the glittering floor. He could see a narrow hallway to the left, glowing pale blue where light slipped through cracks in the ceiling. If he followed that hallway, he might reach the other side of the cave - maybe even the place where the cave opened into something warmer.

High Five smiled, and the smile made his cheeks feel extra frosty. “We’ll go left,” he said. “Then we’ll look for an exit.”

They moved together, High Five stepping carefully and buzzby floating just above his head. The echo followed them like a quiet friend: tap… tap… tap, with drips joining in - drip, drip - from somewhere deeper in the cave. The drips sounded steady, not scary, like the cave was keeping time.

But when High Five reached the left hallway, his paw paused. The wall there wasn’t smooth. It was covered with a thin, glassy layer that looked like it would hold tight. High Five pressed his toes against it.

The ice slid.

It wasn’t a fall that hurt - nothing rough, nothing mean. It was more like the wall forgot how to be solid. High Five’s feet skated sideways, and his body made a surprised little wobble.

“Uh-oh,” High Five said, and his voice came out careful. He lifted one paw, then the other, trying to find a patch that would grip.

buzzby buzzed closer, her wings beating faster. “Your toes are slipping,” she said. “Maybe the wall is too smooth.”

High Five leaned in again, testing with just one toe. The toe skated too, sliding farther than he wanted. The hallway felt like it was inviting him in, then letting go.

He swallowed, feeling heat rise in his face - not from the cold, but from worry. “I was so sure this way was right,” he said.

buzzby hovered in front of him so he could see her clearly. “Let’s not rush,” she said. “We can look for another path. Sometimes the cave hides the best route in small places.”

High Five stared at the icy wall, at the tiny sparkles drifting on top like dust. He noticed something new: along the base of the wall, there were faint melt marks, thin lines where a little warmth had kissed the ice before. They looked like tiny roads, pale and uneven.

“Those lines,” High Five murmured. “They look like… they might show where warmth goes.”

buzzby tilted her head. “Warmth hides where it can,” she said. “Maybe it flows somewhere different than the hallway.”

High Five tried again, not pushing his whole paw against the slippery wall, but tracing the melt marks with the tip of one toe. He dragged it gently along the pale lines. This time, the ice didn’t grab him and slide away. The melt marks seemed to be a little less slick, like the cave had been softened there by just enough air.

“It’s different here,” High Five said, relief making his voice brighter. “The lines feel less… slippery.”

buzzby landed lightly on a small ledge of ice beside him, her body making a tiny click. “Try following them,” she suggested, and her tone was calm, the way you speak when you want someone to feel safe.

High Five took one careful step, toe first, and then another. His feet still found cool, hard ice, but the melt marks guided him like a quiet map. The echo changed too - tap… tap… tap turned into a softer rhythm as he got closer to the end of the hallway.

He rounded a bend and stopped short. The hallway ended in a dead-end wall, smooth and blank, with no hallway continuing forward. High Five stared at it, and his tail drooped.

“So close,” he said. “This is it. There’s no way through.”

buzzby hovered, her wings humming. “Wait,” she said, and her eyes flicked around the ice. “Look up.”

High Five looked where she pointed. Near the ceiling, a thin crack split the glittery ice. It wasn’t wide enough for his whole body, but it wasn’t totally sealed. A faint draft slipped out from it, carrying a whisper of warmer air.

High Five leaned closer, feeling the air brush his nose. It was still cold, but it wasn’t the same sharp cold as the hallway....
