Moonbound Hearts

The first thing Rowan noticed about Briarwood High was the smell - wet wool from damp coats, floor wax gone slick in the main hallway, and something sharper underneath like cold metal. The second thing was the way the crowd moved around him, not away exactly, but like he was a stone in a shoe everyone pretended not to feel.

Rowan tightened his backpack strap and kept his eyes on the lockers, on the silver numbers and the chipped paint, on anything that wasn’t the entrance where the bell echoes died out in a rush of voices. He’d promised himself he’d disappear today. Blend in. Don’t give anyone a reason to look twice.

But the moment he stepped through the front doors, the air changed - thicker, as if the school had drawn a breath it couldn’t let out. He felt it in his teeth. A shiver crawled up his arms, not from the autumn chill that made the front steps gritty under his shoes, but from the pressure of attention that had nothing to do with him being new. It was like the hallway had already decided he belonged to someone else’s problem.

He’d barely gotten his schedule unfolded when someone collided into his shoulder from the side, hard enough that his books slipped, pages fanning like startled birds. Rowan grabbed for the nearest stack, fingers scraping over glossy covers, and looked up ready to apologize - ready to swallow whatever sting came with being the new kid - when the boy in front of him leaned in.

His expression wasn’t angry in a normal way. It was sharpened, controlled by something animal underneath. A growl rumbled in the back of his throat like thunder trapped behind teeth, and his eyes - too bright, too focused - flicked over Rowan’s face as if searching for a flaw.

Rowan froze with his grip still on the books. “Sorry - ”

The boy’s mouth twisted. “Watch where you’re going.”

The words were quiet, but the growl didn’t fully stop. It vibrated through Rowan’s chest, through the bones under his skin. Rowan’s fingers tightened until the corners of his papers bent. He could have stepped back. He could have apologized again. He could have done anything to make the space around them feel normal.

Instead, he forced his voice steady. “I was walking.”

“I can see that.” The boy’s gaze dropped to Rowan’s hands, to the way his knuckles were pale from holding on too tight. “You always do that. Like you don’t know you’re stepping into a fight.”

Rowan blinked. “I don’t - ”

Another student brushed past them, laughing, and the air loosened just a fraction. Rowan sucked in a breath that tasted like someone else’s cologne and cold exhaust from the street. He managed to gather his books into a stack, spine creaking under his palm.

The boy didn’t help. He just stared - waiting, like he expected Rowan to get it wrong again.

Rowan shifted his grip and tried to move around him, aiming for the hallway toward the main staircase. His shoes scuffed the floor wax, and the sound felt too loud in the sudden quiet between them. He took two steps.

The boy angled with him, blocking his path without touching. The growl returned, lower this time, almost conversational. “You’re late.”

Rowan looked at his schedule, at the time printed in neat black ink. “It’s… first period. I’m early.”

The boy’s nostrils flared. “Not for you.”

Heat climbed Rowan’s neck. He didn’t know this kid. He didn’t know any of the rules behind whatever this was, and that was the problem: not knowing made every move feel like a gamble. Rowan lifted his chin like he could charm the situation into something harmless. “Are you going to stand there all day?”

A couple of students nearby pretended not to listen, but their laughter died down at the edges. Rowan felt their attention like static on his skin. He could handle being stared at. He couldn’t handle being targeted.

The boy’s eyes snapped to the side - toward the front entrance where a cluster of werewolf kids in dark uniforms were coming in, shoulders broad, hair damp from the rain, faces set with the kind of calm that wasn’t peaceful. Their eyes slid over Rowan and away again, like looking too long would burn.

Rowan followed the glance and - just for a second - caught the way one girl’s mouth tightened when she saw the boy. Like she’d heard his growls before. Like she’d expected them.

When Rowan looked back, the boy had moved closer. Close enough that Rowan could smell him - wet earth and something metallic underneath, like the scent of stormwater trapped in rock. Close enough that the space between them felt charged.

“Rowan Hale,” the boy said, and Rowan’s stomach dropped because he hadn’t told anyone his name.

Rowan’s throat tightened. “How do you know that?”

The growl deepened. “Because you’re a problem.”

The hallway noise swelled again around them as if the world had decided to keep going. Rowan forced himself to breathe through the tightness in his ribs. He wanted to ask questions. He wanted to demand answers....
