Shady’s Big Bright Fear

The room hummed soft and warm. A little nightlight glowed beside Leo’s bed, painting the walls a sleepy yellow. Beneath the bed lived a small shadow named Shady. He liked to curl around the bed legs like a sleepy cat. Shady loved quiet noises: the tick of the clock, Leo’s slow breaths, and the tiny rustle of blanket paws.

Shady hid when the lamp was on. Bright light made him shrink close to the floor. He tucked himself into the dark corners, where he felt safe and snug. From there, Shady watched Leo. Leo was a toddler boy with brave gulps and big curious eyes. At bedtime he told gentle stories to his stuffed bear and hummed small songs. Even when his voice trembled a little, he kept going. That made Shady feel warm inside.

One night, Shady practiced moving like a whisper across the floor. He liked to make soft shapes-round like a moon, long like a road, silly like a spaghetti noodle. When the lamp shone, Shady flattened and hid. He could see the light make bright puddles on the carpet and splash on Leo’s socks. Shady wondered if Leo noticed him.

Leo peered under the bed sometimes with his small toes wiggling in his pajamas. He was brave during the searching, even if the dark made his heart beat fast. Shady watched those toes and felt a tickle of hope. Maybe one night he could creep closer. Maybe one night he could whisper hello.

That very night, as Leo tucked his bear under the blanket, Shady slid a little farther from his usual corner. He imagined saying hello if the light ever went away. He practiced soft words in his head. He was afraid of bright lamps, but he felt brave in the dark.

A little breeze from the open window lifted a curtain. The nightlight hummed and painted the room in sleepy yellow. Shady curled back, listening. He knew: when the lamp stayed strong, he must hide.
