The last thing Goku remembered was reaching for a bowl of rice. The next thing he knew, his fingers were wrapped around a golden chain hanging from a gate, and the chain was screaming.

It screamed in a woman’s voice.

“State your name and purpose, intruder!”

Goku blinked at the red sunset burning across the sea. Behind him, the ocean stretched without a single boat. Ahead stood a black iron gate decorated with roses, skulls, and a golden crest shaped like a pair of wings. Beyond it rose the mansion of Rokkenjima, its windows glowing as if every room had been waiting for him.

“My name is Goku,” he said. “I’m looking for whoever brought me here.”

The chain tightened around his wrist.

“And if I don’t like the answer?”

Goku smiled. “Then I’ll ask again.”

The gate opened by itself.

A bell rang somewhere inside the island. Once. Twice. On the third ring, the ground beneath Goku’s boots split into a white-and-red chessboard.

He dropped.

“Whoa!”

He landed on one knee inside a vast hall that had not been there a moment earlier. Marble pillars climbed into darkness. Golden chandeliers swung overhead, though there was no wind. On the floor, red lines formed a maze around him, each line glowing like fresh paint.

At the far end waited a throne.

Beatrice sat upon it, one leg crossed over the other, her golden hair spilling over her black dress. She held a glass of wine in one hand and a long golden pipe in the other. Her smile carried the confidence of someone who had already read the ending.

“Welcome to my game,” she said. “Though I suppose welcoming you is unnecessary. You have already broken the entrance.”

Goku stood and dusted marble powder from his pants. “Did you bring me here?”

“Perhaps.”

“Can you send me home?”

“Perhaps.”

“That’s not very helpful.”

Beatrice’s smile widened. “You are standing in a territory governed by truth, interpretation, and the rules of a closed game. Every step you take will be judged. Every attack will become evidence. Every victory will create a new question.”

Goku glanced at the maze. “Can I just walk to you?”

“You may try.”

He did.

The instant his boot crossed the first red line, the hall changed. The marble floor became black water. Chains erupted from beneath it, wrapping around his ankles and yanking him down. At the same time, the chandeliers released hundreds of silver knives.

Goku twisted aside. The knives struck the water with sharp metallic splashes. He pulled one leg free and kicked the nearest chain hard enough to crack the floor beneath it.

The chain snapped.

The broken end became a spear.

Goku caught it inches from his face.

“Okay,” he said. “That’s a little rude.”

Beatrice laughed. “Violence creates violence. That is the first rule.”

Goku threw the spear at the ceiling. It vanished before touching the chandelier.

A new red line appeared around him.

“Truth creates consequence,” Beatrice continued. “That is the second.”

The water rose to Goku’s waist. Something large moved beneath it, circling. He could feel scales brushing his legs. The hall smelled of wet stone and old roses. Each breath carried the cold of the island’s graveyard.

Goku looked toward Beatrice. “What happens if I break the rules?”

“The game will punish you.”

“What if the game can’t?”

For the first time, her golden eyes narrowed.

Goku clenched his fists.

Blue-white energy burst from his body, blasting the water away in a circular wave. The chains shattered. The red maze-lines flickered. His hair lifted as golden light erupted around him, and the hall shook from floor to ceiling.

“Super Saiyan!” he shouted.

His aura struck the pillars. Several cracked. One chandelier tore loose and crashed behind him in a shower of crystal.

Beatrice rose from her throne.

“You foolish man,” she said, though there was excitement in her voice now. “You cannot overpower a narrative.”

Goku vanished.

He appeared in front of her with his fist already moving.

Beatrice lifted her pipe. A wall of red text formed between them.

“Red truth,” she declared. “Goku cannot reach Beatrice.”

His fist hit the words.

The hall boomed.

The red letters bent around his knuckles, stretched, and shattered like glass.

Beatrice’s eyes widened.

Goku’s punch stopped a finger’s width from her face. The pressure alone sent her hair flying backward.

“Looks like I reached you.”

The wall behind Beatrice exploded.

She flew from the throne and struck the far side of the hall, golden ornaments scattering across the floor. Before she could rise, Goku landed beside her and lifted one hand.

“Wait,” Beatrice snapped.

Goku paused. “What?”

“You have not won. You have merely forced a contradiction.”

“Is that bad?”

“It is catastrophic.”

The floor answered for her.

Every chessboard square opened at once. Black hands clawed upward. Red letters crawled across the pillars, the ceiling, and Goku’s own arms.

GOKU IS AN INTRUDER.

GOKU HAS NO ROLE.

GOKU CANNOT WIN.

The words burned against his skin.
