Zach And Rebecca In Rhymes

Zach arrived at the riverside fair with three folded rhyme-cards in his pocket, one loose shoelace, and a courage that kept trying to escape through his grin.

The midway flashed gold beside the river. Lanterns swung from ropes, sweet smoke curled from the cider stalls, and the waterwheel turned with a wet, creaking thunder - round and round, bright and drowned in dusk. Zach spotted Rebecca near its glowing rim and forgot every line except the one he had promised himself he would never say too soon.

He touched the top card through his jacket.

“Easy,” he muttered. “Be clever, not fevered. Be bright, not - ”

“Not what?”

Rebecca stood three steps away, holding a paper cone of sugared almonds. A blue ribbon trembled in her hair whenever the river breeze slipped past. She tilted her head, amused already, as if she had caught him stealing a secret instead of rehearsing a greeting.

Zach’s rehearsed confidence collapsed, then rebuilt itself crookedly.

“Not… defeated,” he said.

“By a sentence?”

“By your presence. Your brilliance. Your - ”

“Careful,” Rebecca said. “That sounded dangerously close to flattery.”

“Flattery with meter,” Zach replied. “A sweeter kind of battery.”

She blinked once. Then the corner of her mouth lifted.

There it was - the half-smile he had been hoping to earn, the small silver spark under all the fairground noise. Zach leaned against the painted rail beside the waterwheel, though the rail was slick with mist and his elbow nearly slid off.

Rebecca noticed. “Smooth.”

“Smooth as the wheel as it rolls by the river,” he said, catching himself. “Though my elbow may quiver.”

“Your elbow?”

“I’m working with what I’ve got.”

She laughed, not loudly, but enough to make him feel the sound land between them like a tossed coin. He wanted to pick it up and keep it. Instead, he unfolded the first rhyme-card.

Rebecca reached for it.

Zach snatched it back. “No peeking.”

“Are you carrying evidence?”

“Evidence of preparation.”

“Preparation for what?”

“For you.”

The answer came out too quickly. The fair seemed to sharpen around it: the cinnamon bite in the air, the wheel’s groan, the cold dampness feathering his cheeks. Rebecca’s smile faded - not vanished, exactly, but changed shape.

“For me?” she asked.

Zach’s fingers tightened around the card. “For meeting you here.”

“We’ve met before.”

“Briefly. You borrowed my pen and returned it without the cap.”

“You survived.”

“Barely. I wrote a poem about the tragedy.”

“Was it tragic?”

“Four lines. Very dramatic.”

“Then recite it.”

He had expected teasing, not a challenge. Still, he bowed with theatrical gravity.

“Your pen lost its lid in a terrible plight,

It wandered through noon and returned by night.

But though its poor barrel was scratched and distressed,

It wrote your name beautifully - better than the rest.”

Rebecca looked down at the almonds. “That is not a poem about the pen.”

“It is a poem about what the pen wrote.”

“Convenient.”

“Romantic.”

“Conveniently romantic.”

Zach felt warmth climb his neck, and the dusk did nothing to hide it. “You’re difficult.”

“I’m discerning.”

“Worse.”

“Better.”

The wheel turned behind her, sending strips of yellow light across her face. Every rotation made her look near and far, near and far - there, then broken into brightness. Zach had imagined this moment while walking home, while brushing his teeth, while pretending to listen to his own music. In each version, Rebecca stayed still and let him say something unforgettable.

In this version, she kept eating almonds and making him earn every word.

He tucked the card away. “All right, Rebecca. I have a proposition.”

“That sounds suspicious.”

“A lyrical proposition.”

“More suspicious.”

“If I can make you smile twice before the wheel makes one full turn, you let me ask you a question.”

“You’ve already asked several.”

“A real question.”

Her gaze flicked toward the waterwheel. “And if you fail?”

“You get to choose my punishment.”

“Publicly?”

“Painfully.”

“Those are not the same thing.”

“They could be.”

Rebecca studied him. Beneath the mischief, something guarded moved in her eyes. She was not merely playing along. She wanted to know whether his confidence was a costume or a skin.

“Fine,” she said. “One turn.”

The wheel groaned. A wooden bucket tipped, spilled silver water, and began its climb.

Zach faced her.

“Rebecca, you arrive with the evening tide,

With almond-sweet laughter you cannot quite hide.

The lanterns lean nearer, the river runs bright - ”

“Too much,” she said, but she was smiling.

“One smile,” Zach said. “That counts.”

“It was a correction.”

“A correction with affection.”

“Don’t rhyme affection with correction.”

“Then give me direction.”

She raised one almond between two fingers. “You’re steering toward disaster.”

“Yet you’re still standing beside me.”

Her fingers paused. The almond gleamed sugar-white. For one breath, the fairground seemed to loosen its grip....
