Wise Tortoise And Beautiful Peacock

Lantern light shimmered on the water as Mia Hart stepped onto the narrow path beside Lantern Pond. The air smelled like cool reeds and sweet night-blooming flowers, and the pond made a quiet, shhh-shhh sound as waves kissed the stones. When Mia reached for the hem of her sweater, it fluttered in the evening breeze, and she could hear her own footsteps - tap-tap - mixing with the soft clink of tiny lanterns floating farther out.

“Quickly,” Mia whispered, not because she was in trouble, but because bedtime was getting closer. She looked at the pond’s wide, glittering surface and then at the small, steady figures beside her. Wise Tortoise had his head lifted, calm as a moon on a pond. Beautiful Peacock stood tall on a smooth rock, her feathers catching the lantern glow like bits of evening sky.

“We’ll find the quickest way,” Mia said, trying to sound brave. Her tummy felt fluttery, like when you can’t find your sock in the morning. She had promised herself she’d get home before the night grew too deep.

Wise Tortoise’s voice was gentle, like the pond’s sound. “Slow feet, quick mind. Watch the water where we step.”

Beautiful Peacock tilted her head. “And listen,” she added, as if the pond might hum a secret. “Sometimes the pond tells you where it is easiest.”

Mia nodded and stepped toward the first stone that floated just above the surface. The lanterns made bright circles on the water, and each circle seemed to wiggle like a dancing firefly. Mia took one careful step, then another, feeling the cool dampness near her shoes and the faint rocking beneath her.

The problem appeared the moment she tried to look for the crossing that should have been right in front of her. A lily-pad drifted into the path - soft green, wide as a plate, its edge shining with lantern light. Mia blinked, and it didn’t drift away. It simply slid a little farther, like it was choosing that exact spot.

“It’s blocking,” Mia said, her voice smaller. She leaned forward and watched the lily-pad bob, bob, bob, until the end of the quickest route disappeared behind it. The pond looked the same everywhere else - glimmering, calm - but that last stretch felt suddenly tricky, like a puzzle piece missing.

Beautiful Peacock fluttered her wings once, not to fly, just to make the air feel attentive. “Maybe we can go around,” she suggested, her eyes bright.

Wise Tortoise shook his head slowly. “Around can be longer. And longer can be harder before bedtime.”

Mia’s worry rose like a warm bubble that popped too quickly. She wanted to cross now, to reach home with her pajamas folded and her blanket ready. “But we have to get across,” she said. “My bedtime book…”

Wise Tortoise smiled with his whole face, even though he didn’t smile with teeth. “We can still cross. The pond is careful. It likes to move its own way.”

Mia stared at the lily-pad, feeling the lantern circles tremble on its surface. She tried to decide where to step, but the pad’s slow movement made her think the ground might change under her feet. She planted her next step carefully anyway, testing the water’s edge stones with the toe of her shoe.

The first attempt was fast, the way Mia wanted things to be. She pointed at a spot to the side of the lily-pad. “We can go here,” she said, stepping toward a line of stones that looked solid and bright.

Beautiful Peacock followed the direction of Mia’s finger and let out a soft, surprised sound. “Oh,” she murmured.

The stones weren’t where Mia expected them. Between lantern circles, the water swirled a little, and a second lily-pad drifted nearer, just enough to make the side route narrow and bumpy. Mia felt the stone under her shoe tilt, not danger, just wobble. Her heart thumped once - then she steadied herself by breathing in through her nose and out through her mouth.

“Too wiggly,” Mia said, lowering her voice. She didn’t want to rush into a place that didn’t feel friendly.

Wise Tortoise moved closer to her side, his shell catching the warm light. “What did you notice?” he asked.

“That the stones move,” Mia answered. “Not like they’re floating away, but like the pond is… rearranging.”

Wise Tortoise nodded. “Yes. The quickest way is the one that stays kind to you.”

Mia looked down at the water again. The lily-pads weren’t just blocking; they were creating a moving maze, turning the pond into a shifting path. She swallowed, tasting cool air and pond-sweet flowers.

Beautiful Peacock lifted her beak toward the lanterns. “I hear something,” she said. Her voice turned soft, as if she were listening for a lullaby. “When the pads nudge, they make a tiny sound. Like a whisper on leaves.”

Mia leaned in, and now she could hear it too. Not loud - just a small, gentle tap-tap-tap when a pad bumped another. The sound came from a rhythm, not a hurry. It made Mia think about waves at the shore, arriving and leaving calmly.

“Maybe we can follow the sound,” Mia suggested, and her worry loosened a bit.
