Destiny’s New Chapter

The phone buzzed against the arm of the couch, and Destiny reached for it before she could stop herself.

For one second, she wanted it to be her fiancé. Not a notification from some forgotten account, not a message from a number she did not recognize, but his name lighting the dark room. She wanted him to say he missed her. She wanted proof that distance had not changed the promise they made before he left the state for his new job.

The screen stayed black.

Destiny turned the phone facedown again.

The living room smelled faintly of laundry detergent and the chicken she had warmed earlier for her son. A sports bag rested near the front door, still carrying the sharp scent of grass and sweat from practice. Upstairs, her teenage son slept before another morning of training, his body needing rest for the athletic life he had worked so hard to build.

Destiny sat alone beneath the blue light of the television, though she had muted it hours ago. The silent players moved across the screen while her eyes remained fixed on the phone.

She had already left the music industry. She had already given up the part of her life that once made strangers feel entitled to know where she was, who she loved, and what she planned to do next. Then one morning, she had woken to see her psychotic ex following her on Instagram.

The sight of his name had turned her stomach cold.

He had been gone from her life for years, but there he was, watching from the edge of her page as if time had not passed. Destiny had stared at the screen until her hands began to tremble. She had imagined him finding her home, tracking her movements, using every photograph and location tag to pull himself back into her world.

By nightfall, she had deleted Instagram.

Then the rest followed.

Facebook. Every old account. Every public photograph. Every trace she could find.

She had not done it for attention. She had done it because survival mattered more than being seen.

Now the internet was gone, but the fear had not disappeared. It had simply moved into the quiet places.

Her phone buzzed again.

Destiny flinched so hard her knee struck the coffee table. A glass of water shivered beside the remote.

She picked up the phone and saw his name.

Her breath caught.

“Hey,” she whispered, though he could not hear her yet.

She answered. “Hello?”

For a moment, there was only a faint rush of air on the other end. She could picture him wherever he was - sitting in a room that did not belong to her, surrounded by new streets, new coworkers, and a life that seemed to be making room for everyone except her.

“You up?” he asked.

His voice was familiar enough to hurt.

“I’m always up when you call.”

“That’s not what I asked.”

Destiny pressed her fingers to her temple. “Yes. I’m up.”

He gave a small sound, almost a laugh, but it carried no warmth. “How’s your son?”

“Asleep. He has practice in the morning.”

“Right.”

The pause grew between them. Destiny could hear a television somewhere behind him, voices rising and falling. He was not alone, or at least he did not sound alone. She looked toward the dark hallway, wishing she could step through the phone and see what he was refusing to tell her.

“How was work?” she asked.

“Fine.”

“You like it?”

“It’s different.”

Different. He had begun using that word often. Different job. Different energy. Different direction.

Each time he said it, Destiny felt the ground beneath their engagement shift by an inch.

“I’m glad it’s going well,” she said.

“Yeah.”

She waited for him to ask about her day. She had gone to another interview that afternoon, sitting in a stiff chair beneath fluorescent lights while a woman with a clipboard asked whether she could handle pressure. Destiny had wanted to laugh. Pressure was the only thing she had known for months.

Instead, she had said yes.

She had said yes because she needed work. She needed a reason to leave the house. She needed enough money to keep the bills paid and her son steady. She needed to prove that her life could still move forward even when the person she planned to marry had moved away.

He did not ask about any of that.

“Are you coming home soon?” Destiny said.

His silence answered before he did.

“I don’t know,” he replied.

“You said you were going for the interview.”

“I got the job.”

“I know you got the job. You said you’d see how it went.”

“I am seeing how it goes.”

She tightened her grip on the phone. “And what does that mean for us?”

“Destiny…”

The way he said her name made it sound like a warning.

“I’m not trying to start anything,” she said. “I’m asking because we’re engaged. We’re separated, but we’re still engaged.”

“Things change.”

Her chest tightened.

“Things change,” she repeated.

“I’m just saying we can’t pretend nothing is different now.”

“You’re the one who left.”

“I left for work.”

“You left on my grandmother’s death anniversary.”

The words slipped out, sharper than she meant them to be. The room seemed to absorb them.
