Foreword: Before You Begin

You may have picked up this book expecting ghost stories. In some ways, that's exactly what this is. But I want to say something first, before you turn the page on Chapter One.

You are not as alone in this as you think.

For years, I believed what happened to me - the whispers, the shadows, the unmistakable feeling of being watched by someone who loved me - was mine alone to carry. Something to keep quiet about, lest people assume grief had finally cracked me open in some unflattering way.

But the truth is far less isolating than I once believed. Studies and polling across the world consistently find that a significant portion of people - ordinary people, not mystics or the broken-hearted alone - report experiences they cannot explain through conventional science: a presence in an empty room, a voice that calls a name no one else heard, a visit from someone who has already died. These aren't fringe experiences. They are common enough that researchers have a name for them, common enough that nearly every culture across history has its own language for what happens in that quiet space between worlds.

I am not asking you to believe everything in these pages. I am only asking you to consider that what happened to me may not be as impossible as it sounds - because it has happened, in one form or another, to so many others who simply never had the words, or the courage, to say so out loud.

This is my attempt at both.

How to Read This Book

This isn't a story that moves in a straight line - and it isn't meant to. Each of the eight chapters in The Quiet Between Worlds stands on its own, capturing a different moment, a different encounter, a different piece of what I've come to understand about the space between the living and whatever comes after.

You can read this book start to finish, the way it's written. Or you can skip to the chapter that calls to you first - maybe one whose title mirrors something you've felt yourself. There's no wrong way in. Grief and the unexplainable rarely arrive in order; I didn't want this book to pretend otherwise.

However you read it, I hope you leave these pages a little less alone in what you've seen, felt, or quietly never said out loud.

Chapter One: Voices in the Dark

I don't remember exactly how old I was the first time it happened - only that I was young enough to still believe the world worked the way grown-ups said it did. Simple. Explainable. Safe in the dark, as long as the door was closed and the nightlight was on.

That belief didn't last.

It started as a whisper. Not one voice, but two - close to my ear, low and quick, the way people talk when they don't want to be overheard. I froze. I listened harder, certain that if I just paid close enough attention, the words would untangle themselves into something I understood. They never did. The voices spoke in a rhythm that almost sounded like language, almost sounded like two people having a conversation right beside my pillow, and yet every time I reached for meaning, it slipped away from me like water through fingers.

I remember pulling the blanket up over my ear, certain that fabric could somehow block out something I couldn't even name. It didn't, of course. The whispering didn't get louder or angrier - it simply continued, indifferent to whether I was listening or hiding. That, somehow, was worse than if it had screamed.

I was a child, and children are supposed to be afraid of the dark in the ordinary way - afraid of shadows that turn out to be coats on a chair, sounds that turn out to be pipes settling in the walls. But this was different, and some part of me, even then, knew it. There was no innocent explanation I could offer myself. No coat. No pipe. Just two voices, whispering words I couldn't understand, in a room where I was supposed to be alone.

I never told anyone at first. What would I have said? I heard people talking in my ear, but there was no one there? I was certain I'd be told I imagined it, or worse, that something was wrong with me. So I carried it quietly, the way children learn to carry things they don't yet have words for.

Looking back now, I understand that this was only the beginning. The whispers were the first thread in something much larger - a pattern that would weave through the rest of my life, moment by moment, until I could no longer pretend it was nothing. But that night, I only knew one thing for certain: I was not as alone in that room as I had been told I was.
