Three Animal Bedtime Friends

Moonlight lay soft on the meadow like a cool, silvery blanket itself. Pip the small pig stood near his bedtime spot, his blanket usually tucked close to his snout. Tonight, though, the place where it rested felt empty. He could smell the clean wool he loved, but it wasn’t there anymore.

You could hear the night bugs singing far away, and the grass tickled Pip’s hooves when he took a step. The air felt chilly in little patches, like the meadow was wearing a sweater with some holes. Pip blinked hard. “Where did you go?” he whispered to the dark, as if the blanket might answer.

You and Pip both knew bedtime was coming. Pip’s tummy felt warm and cozy when he had his blanket, but without it the meadow seemed too wide. He took a slow sniff. “I smell you… maybe. Not sure,” he said, then looked left, then right. The moon made the shadows look like lumps of cotton, and Pip couldn’t tell which lump belonged to his blanket.

He tried one thing first. Pip wiggled his ears and listened for the soft sound his blanket made when it brushed a twig. “Shh… blanket,” he said gently, and he tiptoed across the grass, careful like he was walking on toast.

The grass whispered back, but no blanket sound came. Pip lowered his nose toward a patch of pale weeds and saw something that looked almost right - until he got closer. There, near a tall bush, the blanket was caught in a tangle of twigs and vines. It was right there, so close he could smell it, but it wouldn’t slide free.

Pip reached out with one little hoof. The vines held on tight. “Oh no,” he murmured, and the tangled spot felt like a knot in a shoelace. He tugged once, very softly, and the blanket only twisted more.

You could feel his worry in the way he stopped moving. “I can’t carry you like this,” Pip said to the blanket, then looked around the bush. The vines were tangled, but they weren’t scary. They were just messy, like a ribbon that needed patience.

Pip took a careful breath. “Okay,” he told you, and you could hear how brave his voice sounded, even though he was small. “We’ll untangle you together.”

At the bush, the blanket waited in the moonlight, close but stuck. Pip leaned in and began to loosen the vines little by little, while the meadow hummed softly around you both, and the cozy smell of the blanket grew stronger.
