Aero Vale And The Crystal Sky

“Psst… up here.”

Rowan Vale stopped beside the bakery door. Warm bread smell drifted into the quiet street, but the voice was not from the shop. It came on the wind.

Aero Vale was usually full of soft sounds: shutters tapping, ribbons fluttering, and pigeons cooing on the roofs. This morning, the wind whispered again.

“Rowan…”

He looked up. Blue sky shone between the rooftops. A paper kite wiggled on a chimney like a happy fish.

“I hear you,” Rowan said.

The wind slipped down a narrow alley. It tugged at the loose end of his scarf.

Rowan followed.

The alley led toward the old stone archway at the edge of town. People used to walk beneath it on festival days, carrying bright flags. Now, weeds grew between the stones, and silver dust rested on the ground.

A gust rushed past Rowan’s shoes.

“Wait!” he called.

The gust spun around him. It pushed from the front, then the side, then the back. Rowan tried to step forward, but the wind nudged him away.

“Maybe you want me to go home,” he said.

The wind gave a low, busy hum.

Rowan tried the left wall. A puff of air brushed his cheek and sent him back. He tried the right wall. Another puff lifted his cap and dropped it on a rain barrel.

Rowan picked up his cap. “That was not very helpful.”

He sat on the barrel and listened. Beneath the gusts, he heard a tiny chime.

Once.

Twice.

Rowan closed his eyes. The wind was not blocking every path. It was guarding one path.

He stood and watched the dust. Small silver marks appeared beneath the arch, one after another, like stepping-stones.

“Ah,” Rowan whispered. “You want me to follow the quiet spaces.”

He took one step where the air was still. Then another. The gusts swirled around him, but they did not push him away.

At the center of the arch, a pale blue glow flickered in the stone. It shaped itself into a picture of a sky filled with shining crystals.

Rowan reached toward it.

The picture changed. A dark line crossed the crystal sky, and a small mark appeared beneath it. It looked like a warning arrow pointing upward.

The wind whispered one last word.

“Find.”

Rowan lowered his hand. The alley was still safe, and the bakery bell rang far behind him. Yet the glowing arrow made his stomach feel as wiggly as a jar of lemonade.

He tucked his cap under his arm and stepped beneath the arch.

The wind opened a bright, twisting passage ahead.
