The Beginning After The End

The archive deck had no windows, but Juno Hale felt the planet through the floor.

Every twelve seconds, the ark corrected its approach vector, and the deck answered with a soft metallic shudder. Dust trembled along the sealed corridor seams. Somewhere beyond the hull, beyond the layered radiation shields and the dark machinery of the colony ship, a habitable world waited beneath its clouds.

Juno tightened his grip on the artifact.

It was no larger than his palm, a black disc cut from a material that refused to reflect the corridor lights. Its surface was cold enough to burn through his gloves. Along its rim, beneath centuries of mineral crust, one line of lettering had appeared when he brushed away the dust.

HALE, JUNO.

Not a title. Not an old family mark.

His name.

The restricted archive door stood ahead, its iris sealed in red. Juno had spent six years cataloging permitted fragments of human history, most of them salvaged from the ark’s founding vaults: launch manifests, genetic ledgers, recordings of Earth before the sun died. He had never been authorized beyond Archive Deck Nine.

Tonight, authorization had become less useful than urgency.

He pressed the artifact against the reader.

The door opened.

A tone sounded behind him.

“Historian Hale.”

Juno froze.

Security officer Pell emerged from the cross-corridor, one hand resting near the shock baton at his hip. The ark’s gravity was low enough that his boots clicked lightly against the deck. His eyes moved from Juno’s face to the open door, then to the black disc in his hand.

“You’re outside your assigned sector,” Pell said.

“I was ordered to verify a find.”

“By whom?”

“Curator Venn.”

Pell’s mouth tightened. “Curator Venn is asleep in Medical Two.”

The lie came too quickly. Juno had seen Venn collapse over the artifact less than an hour earlier, his fingers locked around the edge of the examination table while the diagnostic field spat static. Before the medics carried him away, Venn had caught Juno’s sleeve.

Do not let Command see it.

Then he had whispered the name.

Juno.

Not the artifact’s inscription. His own name, spoken as if Venn had been expecting it.

“The artifact was logged under my clearance,” Juno said.

“Then show me the log.”

Juno glanced at the open archive. Rows of dormant terminals waited in the darkness beyond, their status lights dim and blue. The ark’s central systems had begun diverting power to atmospheric preparation and landing operations. Every second narrowed the window before the archive sealed for descent.

Pell stepped closer. “Hale.”

A tremor moved through the deck. This one was harder, accompanied by a deep groan from the ark’s spine. The planet’s gravity was already tugging at them.

Juno stepped backward through the doorway.

Pell reached for him.

Juno slapped the emergency close plate.

The iris snapped shut between them. Pell’s palm struck the metal, and his voice came through the barrier, distorted but furious.

“Open this door!”

Juno ran.

The restricted archive was not built for running. Its corridors bent at impossible angles around old storage chambers, with low ceilings and walls armored against fire, radiation, and human curiosity. Juno moved by the pale guide strips along the floor, the artifact clenched against his chest.

Behind him, the door alarms began to pulse.

He reached the central vault and found the access console dark.

“Come on.”

He pulled the artifact from his coat and set it beneath the scanner. The console flickered. A lattice of unfamiliar symbols unfolded across the screen, not in any archive language Juno knew, but in a geometric sequence that made his teeth ache.

Then the vault unlocked.

The air inside was colder. Preservation systems whispered from behind the walls. Shelves rose into darkness, packed with sealed memory wafers, crystalline tablets, and physical records no one had touched since the ark departed Earth.

Juno entered and let the door close behind him.

For a moment, there was only the sound of his breathing.

He placed the artifact on the examination table. Its surface had changed. Thin lines now glimmered across the black material, forming a web of points and arcs. A map, perhaps, though the pattern had no relation to any star chart in the ark’s navigational library.

Juno activated the table’s imaging field.

The map expanded above the surface in pale silver light.

A planet appeared.

Not the world ahead of them. This globe was scarred by enormous circular structures, their positions marked by rings of symbols. The northern hemisphere was almost entirely dark. Along the equator, a sequence of bright points formed a broken chain.

At the center, a date pulsed.

3,109,442 YEARS PRIOR.

Juno stared at it.

The ark had been in transit for eight hundred and twelve years.

The date belonged to no human calendar. It predated the oldest surviving records by millions of years.

A second line emerged beneath it.
