The gold seams of the coronation dais burned beneath Elowen’s boots as the Hall of Living Seals settled into silence. Not the respectful hush of courtiers pretending not to stare - this was the palace itself going still, as if the stone had decided to listen. The air held a faint, metallic chill, and when Elowen shifted her weight, her skirt brushed the carved runes at the edge of the platform and the lines flared once, then dimmed like a blink.

“Hold steady,” Mara Marrowstone murmured from the side of the dais. Her voice was low enough to be private, but her fingers were tight on the railing, knuckles pale through her gloves. Talen Brighthollow stood beside her with the posture of someone ready to bolt if the world decided to bite. Elowen could feel the heat of their attention like a second set of hands - guarded hope, yes, but hope that had learned to flinch.

The crown waited on the velvet stand at the center, its weightless gleam too bright for the dim banners overhead. Everyone in the hall had called it rightful before today, but no one looked at it the way Elowen did. She looked at it like a door she hadn’t chosen to open.

When the herald’s voice finally carried across the chamber, the words sounded wrong in her ears, too ceremonial, too practiced. “Elowen Marrowstone, born mortal, bearer of the Seals’ - ”

The crown gave a soft, infuriating chime, as if it had heard its own name and approved.

Elowen stepped forward anyway. Her heartbeat kept time with the distant ticking of hidden mechanisms in the walls - old palace logic, patient and cruel. She lifted her chin, let the court see her human face and her human hands, let them read whatever comfort they could in that. If the Seals wanted proof, she would give it. If her magic wanted to keep hiding, she would force it to wait until she had the crown secured.

The nearest seal-stone - tall as a man, set into the dais wall - woke with a ripple of light. Living Seals were not decoration. They were agreements. They breathed in the presence of those the palace accepted, and they punished those it did not.

Elowen felt her human-born magic flare - bright as struck flint - and for a breath she thought she’d done it. She’d accepted the crown. The palace was accepting her.

“I’m fine,” Elowen said, and the lie sounded thin even to her. Her hands, still on the dais rail, had gone faintly numb. She could feel the crown’s pressure - steady, absolute - like a hand clamping down to keep her from running.

The living seals responded to the shift with a low, resonant thrum. It traveled through the floor into her bones. A seal-stone across the hall unfurled an image of her - standing on bare ground, not in this chamber, her hair darker, her eyes wrong in a way that made her stomach twist. The vision wasn’t harmless. It carried the weight of a claim the palace wanted to verify, and it verified her too well.

Mara’s gloved hand flew to her mouth. “No,” she whispered, and Elowen heard grief sharp under the word, like a crack in porcelain.

Elowen forced her mind to move. The crown had recognized her. That was what she wanted - acceptance, legitimacy, the public right to stand here. But the palace had not merely accepted her. It had seen something else in her.
