The music from the party still clung to Bex’s clothes when she slipped out into the night, her heels clicking over the sidewalk like they were trying to outrun something that had already caught up. From inside the house, laughter rose and fell-warm, careless sounds that didn’t belong to the knot in her chest. She’d stood at the edge of that warmth long enough to see it clearly: her ex’s hand at her stepsister’s waist, their faces angled together as if the world had never learned how to hurt her.

For a few seconds she’d tried to breathe through it, to tell herself it was nothing, that she was just tired, just emotional, just-until her ex looked up and his smile landed on her like a slap. Not regret. Not surprise. Just recognition, like she’d been filed away and found again for entertainment.

Bex’s stomach tightened so hard she felt it in her throat. The air outside tasted like cold metal and wet pavement, sharp enough to make her eyes water. She didn’t call anyone. She didn’t even turn back. She just walked, faster and faster, until the party’s light disappeared behind the trees and her longing had nowhere to hide.

The park was only a few streets over, a dark pocket of grass and paths where the city’s noise thinned. Streetlamps bled pale circles through the leaves, and the air smelled of damp earth and someone’s late-night cigarette. She crossed the sidewalk and stopped at the edge of the path, palms pressed to her jeans like she could hold herself together by force. Her phone buzzed once in her hand-another message she didn’t read-then went quiet. Silence settled in, thick as a blanket.

She told herself she was done. Done watching. Done hoping. Done letting the past reach out and touch her like it owned her.

A rustle came from behind the trees-barely there, but her body caught it anyway, like it recognized danger even when there wasn’t any. Bex turned, expecting maybe a drunk or a stray dog, and found a silhouette stepping into the dim light.

Jasper’s shoulders were broad under the dark jacket, his hair mussed as if he’d been running his hands through it. He moved like he belonged to the night, like he could make the quiet part of the world feel less lonely. When he saw her face, his expression shifted-something quick and unreadable, then the familiar edge of ease he used like armor.

“What are you doing out here?” he asked.

His voice was lower than the music had been, roughened by the cold air. It should have been comforting. Instead it made her skin prickle, because Jasper’s presence always pulled at the place inside her that still remembered him.

Bex swallowed. “Leaving.”

Jasper’s gaze flicked over her-messy hair, flushed cheeks, the way she held herself tight. “From what?”

She could’ve lied. She could’ve said she’d gone for air, that she’d gotten bored, that she was just-anything. But the truth pressed against her teeth. “From the party.”

He took a step closer, slow enough not to spook her, and the gravel under his shoes sounded too loud in the quiet. “You storm out?”

“I didn’t storm.” The words came out clipped. She hated how her voice wavered anyway. “I walked.”

Jasper’s mouth tipped, not quite a smile. “That’s storming with better PR.”

Bex let out a breath that wasn’t quite laughter. “You sound like you’ve been rehearsing for this.”

“I have,” he said, and for a second his eyes warmed with something teasing. Then the warmth faltered, replaced by an alertness that made her want to retreat. “You don’t look like someone who’s just having a bad time.”

Bex turned her face away, studying the path ahead as if there were answers in the dark. The grass looked slick, dotted with tiny lights-fireflies or just reflections from the streetlamps, she couldn’t tell. Somewhere a distant car hissed past, tires hushing over wet road.

“What do I look like?” she asked, and she hated herself for how small it sounded.

Jasper’s steps slowed, stopping a comfortable distance away. “Like you saw something you couldn’t unsee.”

Her throat tightened again. She could feel her pulse in her wrists. “Everyone sees everything here.”

“Not everyone gets punched in the chest by it.” His words weren’t harsh, but they had weight. “Bex.”

Hearing her name from him-soft and certain-made her want to turn back and let the past wrap around her like a familiar coat. It also made her want to run until she couldn’t remember her own middle name.

She tried to gather her thoughts, but they kept snagging on the image from the party. Her ex’s smile. Her stepsister’s hand. The way it had all looked so natural to them, like betrayal was just another kind of intimacy.

Bex lifted her chin. “What are you doing here?”

Jasper’s eyes narrowed slightly, the playful mask slipping again. “Same reason as you. Because I didn’t want to be inside when-”

He stopped himself, as if the rest of the sentence was too dangerous to say out loud.

Bex felt that pause like a hook pulling at her. “When what?”
