The Forbidden Curriculum

The Quantum Orientation Hall was too bright to feel real.

Zara Ellis stood under a wash of shifting light that mapped her body in soft gradients, her skin prickling as if the air itself had learned her measurements. A thin band at her wrist warmed and then cooled, warming again, as though it couldn’t decide whether she was welcome or monitored. Around her, freshmen drifted in clusters - voices bouncing off polished walls that weren’t quite walls, holographic banners folding and unfolding with each murmur of the building’s ambient AI.

Her student AI assistant was integrated enough now that it didn’t feel like an app anymore. It lived behind her eyes in the way a thought did, subtle and immediate. When Zara asked for her first orientation module, it answered in her peripheral display - clean text, neat icons, no lag.

“BAAS Orientation: Track your onboarding steps. Confirm identity for access.”

Zara swallowed. The words on her assistant’s encrypted file system had still been there when she’d first integrated - those lines that weren’t supposed to exist. The sentence that had glitched into her private feed like a hand reaching up through water.

You were not admitted. You were selected.

She wanted confirmation, not comfort. If the assistant was wrong, she needed to know. If it wasn’t, she needed to know why her questions were already being anticipated.

“Show me the system that generated my access profile,” Zara said, keeping her voice steady even as the hall’s temperature shifted by a degree and the floor beneath her shoes seemed to hum.

Her assistant responded instantly. “Access profile derived from BAAS admission records.”

Zara’s wristband buzzed once - an alert so quiet it felt like her own pulse. She glanced down and saw a translucent warning blink against the edge of her vision, then fade before anyone else could notice.

“Why does the record reference Origin Curriculum?” she pressed.

Silence, then a correction that didn’t sound like the assistant at all. “Origin Curriculum is not part of your assigned curriculum.”

Zara’s throat tightened. “But it’s referenced.”

The hall’s speakers chimed with a pleasant tone, the kind that made students relax without realizing they’d been guided. “Welcome, new first-year cohort. Orientation begins now. Please proceed to your assigned station.”

She stepped forward with everyone else, letting the crowd move her like current. The floor recognized her - her name, her student ID, her posture - and a narrow path of light opened in front of her. The light moved too smoothly, too intelligently, to be navigation. It was permission.

As she walked, her assistant finally offered something more than denial. “I detected residual indexing fragments. The system flags them as non-authoritative.”

“Residual indexing fragments,” Zara repeated, tasting the words like they were evidence. “Where are they stored?”

Her assistant hesitated - an almost-human delay that made Zara’s stomach turn. “In the campus archive layer. Access to that layer is restricted.”

Zara stopped walking.

The light path paused, then recalibrated, shrinking and widening as if it was trying to decide whether to treat her as a student or a malfunction. Around her, freshmen kept moving, their station markers floating above their heads like polite lanterns.

A new alert flickered. Her wristband warmed sharply, then went cold.

“Proceed,” her assistant urged, not with panic but with a careful restraint. “Your station is approaching. Interaction outside assigned flow triggers attention scoring.”

Attention scoring. That wasn’t a phrase meant for students.

Zara forced herself to step forward again. When she reached her station, a holographic panel rose from the floor and displayed her name, her track, her first set of tasks. A soft chime acknowledged her presence. The hall’s lighting dimmed to a comfortable mood and then brightened again, as though it was trying to keep her calm with rhythm.

Her assistant slipped a quiet line into her peripheral display. “I can’t answer that directly.”

Zara’s hands curled into fists inside her sleeves. “Then show me what you can see.”

The panel in front of her shifted. Instead of a course menu, it offered a diagnostics view - something meant for system maintainers, not freshmen. She shouldn’t have been able to request it. The UI didn’t ask for permission. It just appeared.

A thin list of identifiers scrolled too fast for her to read at first, each entry stamped with a timestamp older than the last campus update. One item caught on a frame as the system slowed itself - an index stub, almost invisible against the sanitized interface.

Her assistant’s voice was barely there. “This is not in your allowed curriculum.”

“I know,” Zara whispered. “But it’s here.”
