The first time Declan Hayes looked at Elise Marrow like she was the only person in the room, he was standing with a beer in his hand and a smudge of flour on his wrist, laughing at something one of the other volunteers said. Elise had been wiping down the counter behind him-too busy, too careful-when her elbow bumped his forearm. The collision was small, but it made the world tilt: his body shifted closer without thinking, his shoulder brushing hers, and the air between them warmed as if it had been waiting for permission.

Across the community kitchen, Juniper “June” Clarke watched the way Elise’s smile softened. June didn’t move to help, didn’t pretend she hadn’t seen. She was leaning against the doorway with her arms folded, the sleeve of her cardigan pushed up to reveal a thin scar on her forearm, and when Declan finally looked away from Elise, his gaze landed on June a second too late.

Elise felt it in her teeth-the delay, the misstep, the way the room suddenly sounded like water in her ears. She dried the same spot on the counter twice, then set the cloth down like it could anchor her.

“Hey,” Declan said, voice easy, almost careless. He angled his body toward Elise as if she’d drawn a line in the floor and he was stepping over it on purpose. “You always wrestle with the sponge that hard?”

Elise didn’t look at the flour on his wrist. She picked up the sponge anyway, squeezing it until it squeaked. “Only when someone’s going to make a mess and pretend it was an accident.”

His grin flickered-bright, quick-and he lifted his beer like it was an offering. “Guilty.”

June’s laugh cut through the kitchen, soft and sharp. “Declan, you’re terrible. You know that, right? You apologize with your whole body.”

Declan’s eyes moved toward June, and Elise watched the change happen in real time: the way his expression steadied, the way his attention rearranged itself like it had been trained. “I don’t apologize,” he said, but the words didn’t match the warmth in his tone. “I… survive.”

June pushed off the doorway and came closer, her shoes scuffing the tile. She smelled like citrus soap and cold air, like she’d walked in from outside just moments ago. When she passed Elise, her shoulder grazed Elise’s, deliberate enough to register, casual enough to deny.

Elise told herself it was nothing. It was always nothing until it wasn’t.

She turned toward the cutting board, picking up a knife with a grip that was too tight. The scent of onions rose as she sliced. The knife tapped the board in a steady rhythm-one-two, one-two-until Declan’s shadow fell across her hands.

“Let me,” he said.

“No.” Elise didn’t mean it to come out like a snap. It did anyway. She looked up, meeting his eyes, and found the subtext waiting there: don’t make me choose, don’t make me prove anything, don’t make me say what I feel.

Declan’s brow lifted. “Okay,” he said slowly, as if he’d just heard a new rule. “Then tell me what you need.”

Elise’s throat tightened. The kitchen was loud-clattering pans, someone laughing by the sink-but her world narrowed to the space between Declan’s palm and the edge of her cutting board. His hand hovered there, not touching her, waiting for her to invite it.

Juniper’s voice came from behind Elise’s shoulder. “You don’t need anything from him. You’re doing fine.”

Elise turned her head just enough to catch June’s gaze. June’s expression was neutral, but her eyes were bright. Competitive, not cruel. It made Elise’s stomach twist anyway.

“I’m doing fine,” Elise echoed, as if agreement could make the feeling go away.

Declan’s mouth twitched. “That’s the thing,” he said, and his tone turned conspiratorial, meant for Elise alone. “You’re always doing fine. It’s exhausting to watch.”

June made a sound-half scoff, half laugh. “Declan, you say things like that and act surprised when people get feelings.”

Elise felt the heat rise under her collarbones. She didn’t want feelings. She wanted clarity. She wanted something she could hold that wouldn’t slip away.

Declan’s hand finally touched down on the counter, close to Elise’s fingers, steadying the board. His knuckles were warm; his flour-smeared skin left a faint dust trail on the wood. Elise hated that she noticed it. She hated that she liked it.

“Do you want me to talk less?” Declan asked June, but his eyes stayed on Elise. “Or do you want me to talk better?”

June’s smile was small. “I want you to be honest.”

The word landed like a dropped utensil. Elise’s heart kicked once, hard, and she forced herself to keep slicing. The onion softened under the blade, releasing its sharpness into the warm air.

Declan leaned in slightly, not enough to be intimate, just enough to make Elise feel his breath on her cheek when he spoke. “I am honest,” he murmured. “I just don’t think you hear me the first time.”
