The locker room door slammed shut, a punctuation mark on Koji’s hasty retreat. Akeno stood there, frozen, the echo of it vibrating in his bones. The lingering scent of disinfectant and sweat, usually so mundane, felt thick, suffocating. He could still feel the ghost of Koji’s lips, a jolt of something electric and utterly disorienting. He’d never kissed anyone before. Not like that. Not… Koji. He looked down at his own hands, flexing his fingers as if to dislodge an invisible residue. His heart hammered against his ribs, a frantic bird trapped in a cage. It wasn’t just a jolt. It was a tidal wave. He’d imagined, in the hazy, unspoken wish-fulfillment of adolescent daydreams, a moment of shared surprise, maybe a nervous laugh, a lingering glance. Instead, Koji had vanished, swallowed by the throng of departing students, leaving Akeno with a raw, exposed nerve and a thousand unanswered questions. He walked through the emptying hallway, the usual cacophony of slamming lockers and shouted goodbyes now a dull roar. His mind was a scramble of disconnected thoughts: Koji’s quiet eyes, the unexpected softness of his mouth, the sharp intake of breath, the fear . Was it his fear? Or was it something else?

8. The next few days were a blur of disjointed observations and mounting anxiety. Akeno found himself scanning every hallway, every classroom, his gaze instinctively searching for Koji. He’d see him, a small figure at the periphery of a group, or hunched over a textbook in the library, and a jolt would shoot through him. He’d try to catch Koji’s eye, offer a tentative nod, a small smile, but Koji always seemed to be looking just past him, or down at his feet, his shoulders hunched as if bracing for a blow. During lunch, Akeno found himself sitting across from his usual group, his gaze drifting towards Koji’s table. Koji ate quickly, his gaze fixed on his tray, his movements precise and economical. He was a creature of habit, Akeno realized, and this unexpected disruption - Akeno - was clearly a deviation he couldn’t process. Akeno felt a pang, not of annoyance, but of a strange, protective ache. He wanted to smooth the furrow in Koji’s brow, to coax a genuine smile from him. But the memory of that recoil, that fear, held him captive. He tried to talk to Koji once, after History class. Koji was packing his bag, his movements deliberate, almost ritualistic. “Hey, Koji,” Akeno said, his voice a little too loud, a little too eager. Koji flinched, his head snapping up. His eyes, usually a deep, dark brown, seemed even darker, guarded. “Yeah?” His tone was flat, devoid of any warmth. “Uh, that project for Mr. Harrison,” Akeno began, fumbling for the right words. “We’re supposed to, like, research historical figures. I was thinking… maybe we could do it together?” He held his breath, a foolish hope blooming in his chest. Koji’s fingers tightened around the strap of his backpack. He didn’t meet Akeno’s gaze directly. “I already have a partner,” he said, his voice barely a whisper. “Oh.” Akeno’s hopeful bubble deflated with a sickening pop. He could feel a flush creeping up his neck. “Who?” Koji mumbled something indistinct, then quickly added, “He’s helping me with the research. It’s fine.” He avoided Akeno’s eyes, his gaze fixed somewhere on the linoleum floor. He finished packing his bag with a sudden urgency, his movements jerky. “Gotta go.”

9. And then he was gone, weaving through the dispersing students, leaving Akeno standing alone in the aisle, the ghost of Koji’s refusal hanging in the air. He felt a strange, unfamiliar sting behind his eyes. It wasn’t just disappointment. It was a deeper, more unsettling feeling. He’d never been rejected like this. Not so cleanly, so completely. The silence between them, once a comfortable backdrop to Koji’s quiet presence, now felt like a gaping chasm. Akeno, who thrived on interaction, on the push and pull of social dynamics, found himself adrift in an ocean of unspoken feelings and unanswered signals. He started noticing things about Koji he hadn’t before. The way he’d sometimes chew on the inside of his cheek when he was nervous. The way his gaze would flicker around a room, taking everything in without engaging....
