The silence broke like a snapped bone.

Maya Cohen dreamed of heat: sunlight filtering through coconut palms, golden sand soft beneath her toes, a breeze perfuming the air with salt and flowers. She had never been anywhere warm in eighteen months. This illusion belonged to someone else-a woman, not ECHO-7, not a weapon holstered at the small of her back.

Then the world exploded.

BOOM.

The eastern wall disintegrated in a fireball that slammed against her eardrums. Maya’s body sprang to life before her mind awoke-years of Mossad rigor and Ghost Protocol refinements shattering sleep’s grip. She rolled off the bed, shattered ceramic from her bedside lamp skittering across the concrete like deadly confetti.

“Perimeter breach. Eastern quadrant. Heavy ordnance.”

The thought was surgical, alien in its detachment. Her brain-engineered for predator logic, hidden behind human flesh-gave her the calculus of survival before emotion could intervene.

Her hand sought the Glock 19 tucked beneath her pillow the way most people found an alarm clock. In one smooth motion, she crouched, weapon leveled, back pressed to the icy wall beside her door.

Through the haze of dust and settling ash, she counted.

Three shapes advancing. Entry compromised. Moving with the fluid precision of special-ops-corners cleared in silent choreography. Not mercs. Government.

The lead soldier’s night-vision goggles glowed sickly green as he spotted her silhouette. His rifle lifted. His lips parted to shout.

POP-POP.

Two rounds drove into his torso. The bulletproof vest slowed them, but not enough. He staggered, eyes flickering, and Maya slid sideways just as a burst of gunfire chewed through the space she’d occupied. Plaster dust blossomed around her.

She hit the ground rolling, grabbed the heavy metal chair by her desk, and flung it toward the nearest intruder. The chair clanged against his armor, buying her eight-tenths of a second. Enough.

She sprang like a coiled spring. Her left hand yanked his rifle upward; her right rammed the Glock under his jaw.

BLAM.

He crumpled.

The second man pivoted-too slow. Maya was on him in a heartbeat: Krav Maga muscle memory exploding in a textbook elbow to the solar plexus, a knee to the groin, then hands ripping his head back in a wet crack. He went limp.

Three down. Unknown numbers remaining. Objective unchanged. Window closing.

She slipped into Corridor Alpha-1 expecting emptiness. Instead, four more silhouettes emerged through the swirling smoke-heavier armor, unfamiliar insignia. Contractors? Or something darker.

No hesitation. Maya dropped into a sprinter’s stance and launched herself forward.

The first guard never saw her until her shoulder drove into his sternum, sending him careening into his partner. They fell in a tangle of limbs and guns. She vaulted over them, Glock raised at hip level. The third shooter was already realigning his rifle-too late. Two shots: one shattered his firing hand, the second drilled through his eye socket. He went down twitching.

The fourth man spun to run. Maya didn’t chase speedily-she let him take three desperate strides, then fired into the back of his knee. He screamed and collapsed. She knelt, placed a round between his eyes, stood. Mercy was a luxury she didn’t have.

Stairwell Bravo yawned before her, dark and echoing. Metal steps rang under her boots as she tore downward-four flights to Level B-2, where the server room waited. Somewhere in those racks lay OMEGA-CLEAR, the digital proof that forty-six others like her existed in dormant silence until someone pulled the trigger on their reactivation.

The elevator’s shaft yawned empty-power routed away. Smart. Whoever struck knew the facility’s veins. And knew she was here.

She felt the chill sharpen her focus into a single blade.

Level B-1: a graveyard of dusty crates and stagnant oil. Clear.

Level B-2: behind a six-inch plate door built to imprison nightmares.

Maya paused for 0.6 seconds. Then she raised the H&K 416-stolen from a fallen enemy-and drilled three rounds into the electronic keypad. Sparks flew, smoke curled, the red light blinked out and died, reborn green. She kicked the door open.

SERVER ROOM.

Cold air hissed from vents. Rows of servers glowed sapphire in the gloom. At the terminal, a lone figure typed with surgical calm.

Mid-forties. Dark hair shot with silver, pulled tight into a bun. Tactical garb faded and worn. A healed scar creased her cheekbone. Maya’s heart stuttered. Everyone in the network knew that face.

DELPHINE ROUX. Ghost Protocol Asset Number Three. “La Spectre.”

Delphine looked over her shoulder without surprise. “You’re late.” Her Parisian accent iced every syllable. “I’ve been waiting four minutes.”

Maya swept the room with her pistol. “You here to stop me?”
