The bleachers at Chloe Whitlock’s school were metal-boned and half-painted, the kind that always held a little summer heat even when the sky started turning slate. Chloe sat on the lowest rung, one sneaker hooked under the rail, and watched the football field like it was just another afternoon. Sweat-dark grass rose in waves when the wind shifted. Somewhere above her, a cheerleader’s ponytail slapped the air with a soft, rhythmic crack. All of it felt normal enough to fool the part of her that hated being fooled.

Her phone buzzed once and stopped - no message, just a reminder that the world still ran on screens. Chloe’s own screen stayed face-down in her lap. She didn’t need it. Not yet. Not while she could still hear Mia’s laughter bouncing off the stands and Harper’s sharper voice cutting through it like scissors.

Mia slid onto the bleacher beside her, denim jacket zipped wrong-way because she never bothered to fix it. Harper came in a second later, hair pulled tight, eyes scanning the rows behind Chloe like she expected someone to jump out and accuse them of breathing.

“What’s with the secret-whisper thing?” Mia asked, breathless, like they’d just escaped a detention. “You’re acting like we’re in a spy movie.”

Chloe leaned forward, elbows on her knees, forcing her voice to stay casual. “We are not in a spy movie.”

Harper’s gaze flicked to Chloe’s hands. Chloe’s fingers were too steady. That was the problem with being rich - your body learned control before your mind did. “Then say it,” Harper murmured. “Because you don’t pull us down here for nothing.”

Chloe’s heart didn’t race. It tightened. The bleacher metal under her palm felt slightly damp. She hated the way her family’s money lived in her thoughts like a second heartbeat. She kept it hidden because she wanted to be normal - because normal was the only thing that had ever felt like hers.

She swallowed. The sound of the field - shouts, whistles, the thump of a ball - made the words feel louder when they finally came out.

“My family keeps an emergency stash,” Chloe said, and watched their faces like she was trying to read weather. “Cash. Not in a bank. At our estate.”

Mia blinked once, then twice. “Cash cash?”

“Cash,” Chloe repeated, even though saying it made it heavier. “A million dollars. One million dollars in cash. It’s hidden in a safe.”

Harper let out a breath that wasn’t quite a laugh. “Why are you telling us this?”

Chloe stared at the field lines until they blurred. “Because I trust you. Because I can’t keep pretending I don’t know what people would do if they found out.”

Mia’s expression shifted - fast, like she’d just locked onto a target. “Okay,” she said. “Okay. So… what’s the point of telling us if you want it to stay normal?”

Chloe could hear the answer before she said it. It rose from the place in her chest that wanted to protect her friends from the kind of attention that clung like glue.

“I want it to stay normal for me,” Chloe said. “For you. For everyone. And if something ever goes wrong - if anyone ever gets close - I need you to have the truth, not rumors.”

Harper leaned in, voice lower. “Someone already got close, didn’t they?”

Chloe’s throat went dry. She didn’t want to admit it, but the bleachers weren’t a safe place for secrets anymore - not when the air carried too many angles of watching. She’d felt it for days. The way people looked at her like she was a puzzle they could solve.

“No,” she lied, and hated the way the word tasted.

Mia nudged her shoulder. “Chloe.”

Chloe exhaled through her nose, forcing herself to keep her gaze on the field. “Just - listen. If anyone asks questions, if anyone tries to sniff around, you don’t spiral. You don’t guess. You tell me first.”

Harper’s mouth tightened. “You’re acting like you already know this won’t work.”

Chloe opened her mouth to argue, to insist that she could keep everything contained, and then the sound of footsteps - quick, cautious - cut across the metal steps above them.

Two outsiders moved along the top row like they belonged there. Not friends. Not athletes. Not students who’d been there a thousand times. Their shoes didn’t squeak like the rest. Their voices stayed low, swallowed by the distant noise.

Jax Merrin leaned forward to look down toward the field, his posture too eager, too hungry. Beside him, Leo Park kept glancing around like he expected someone to catch him staring.

Chloe felt the shift in the air the way you felt a storm before it hit - pressure building behind your eyes. She’d seen Jax’s type before. Always the same itch: the belief that if you wanted something badly enough, the world owed it to you.

Mia followed Chloe’s stare and hissed, “Who are those?”

Harper’s eyes narrowed. “They’ve been around.”

Jax’s gaze snagged on Chloe’s group, just for a second, and Chloe felt it like a hook. He wasn’t smiling. His focus was too sharp, too fixed....
