The library’s fluorescent lights hummed like a quiet insect, and Hyuseong could feel the sound in his teeth as he slid into the far corner of the main reading hall. His fingers stayed busy with the pencil he always carried - tapping, then stopping, tapping again - because if he stopped moving, the hallway outside would grow too loud in his head. Somewhere beyond the tall shelves, the corridor door clicked shut and the echo of footsteps softened into the kind of distance that usually meant he could breathe.

He kept his gaze on the page, but his ears tracked everything. A couple of students whispered near the entrance, their voices folded into the air like paper. Hyuseong’s English journal sat unopened in his bag, ink still dry from the last line he’d written in the morning: I can make today quiet. He’d written it the way he drew small sketches - careful strokes, no pressure. Bullying had taught him that pressure could turn into bruises.

When the librarian’s cart rolled past, rubber wheels squeaked faintly on the tile. Hyuseong flinched anyway. He didn’t look up. He didn’t have the habit of asking for help, not after learning how quickly silence could be punished. The page under his thumb blurred for a second, then sharpened again when he blinked hard.

The corner of something pale pressed against his book’s spine.

Hyuseong lowered his pencil and slid his thumb along the edge of the bookmark he didn’t remember placing there. A small folded paper - thin, slightly rough, the kind that tore if you pulled too fast - peeked out from between the pages of his current book. His first thought was stupid and immediate: Maybe it’s for someone else. His second thought came right after, heavier: Maybe it’s for me.

He unfolded it with two careful hands, like the paper might bruise too. The handwriting was tight and slanted, the letters familiar in a way he hated - too sharp, too pleased with itself. In Korean, it listed a date and then a place name that didn’t belong in a quiet library: the corridor by the reading rooms, where the cameras didn’t always catch faces. Beneath that was a line in English, underlined twice as if the writer wanted the words to look louder than they were.

Don’t be late. He’ll be alone.

Hyuseong’s stomach tightened until it felt like his ribs were too close together. He read it again anyway, because he couldn’t stop searching for an explanation that wasn’t fear. The paper smelled faintly of cigarette smoke and detergent - like someone had wiped their hands with something sharp-smelling, trying to erase the fact they’d touched it.

He glanced toward the shelves, still refusing to move his head too much, as if looking would give him away. The hall outside remained calm, but calm in this building was never natural; it was the pause before a sound.

Hyuseong folded the note back into the same creases and slid it under the inner cover of the book, so it sat flush, invisible unless someone knew to look there. His pencil resumed its small tapping, but now his hand felt wrong, like it belonged to someone else who didn’t understand danger.

He wanted this scene to stay small. He wanted to keep his own safety intact and confirm what the note meant without making himself a target.

That was the plan. Quiet confirmation. No drama. No questions.

A voice cut through the hush near the entrance. “Hyuseong.”

His name sounded like a door slamming in a room that was supposed to stay closed.

Hyuseong didn’t turn immediately. He let the words pass over him first, letting his body decide whether to move before his mind could. Then he saw the shadow of two students stretching across the floor between the shelves - tall enough that his own height felt suddenly ridiculous, like he was a mistake someone forgot to correct.

One of them wore a school jacket open at the collar, careless about the rules. The other kept their hands in their pockets, shoulders loose like they were already sure of the outcome. Hyuseong recognized the way they walked: not fast, not loud - just certain.

The student who’d spoken crouched slightly so their face was level with Hyuseong’s line of sight. “You found it, didn’t you?”

Hyuseong’s throat went dry. “Found what?”

The word came out too soft, too controlled, like he’d wrapped it in tissue. The student’s mouth tilted. “Don’t lie. That note. The one about the corridor.”

Hyuseong’s fingers tightened around the pencil until the wood pressed into his skin. He forced his eyes to stay on the page, but the paper under the book felt hot.

“I don’t know,” he said, and hated how it sounded like a confession.

The other student chuckled, a short sound that didn’t reach their eyes. “You’re always pretending you don’t understand. But you always understand when it’s about you.”

Hyuseong swallowed. He could hear the librarian’s cart in the distance again - still moving, still far enough that no one would notice unless the library’s quiet broke....
