Journey Into Danger

The lantern flame bent sideways though the dock was still.

Mara Kestrel noticed it as she crouched behind a stack of tarred lobster pots, one hand pressed against the folded map beneath her coat. The wick leaned toward the harbor tunnels, tugged by a draft that carried the metallic clank of chains and the low slap of tidewater against stone.

She had only seconds before the patrol came back.

“Show me the chart,” called a man somewhere beyond the sheds.

Mara tightened her grip. The map’s edges had gone warm against her ribs.

She had come to the Saltmarsh docks for one thing: a boat out before dawn. Now she needed to reach the tunnels beneath the harbor, keep the hidden route from vanishing, and stay alive long enough to understand why armed smugglers were hunting a piece of old paper.

Boots struck the planks.

Mara peered through the gap between two pots. The dockside maze stretched toward the water in crooked lines: fish stalls shuttered for the night, leaning warehouses, ropes coiled like sleeping snakes. Rain ticked against the tin roofs. Beyond the pilings, black water shivered under the moon.

Three men emerged from the fog.

The first carried a crossbow low against his thigh. The second had a pistol tucked into his belt and a scar running from his ear to his jaw. The third was younger, but he moved with the nervous quickness of a rat in a trap.

“Search every stack,” Scar-Jaw ordered. “She has it.”

“She?” the younger man asked.

“Do you want to ask again?”

Mara lowered herself until her knees touched the wet boards. The map pressed against her chest. She could still see what she had found beneath the faded ink: a route drawn in a color that did not belong to any ordinary dye, winding from the salt marsh through the buried harbor and out beyond the eastern reef. At its center, a cluster of marks formed the beginning of coordinates.

She had thought the discovery might buy her passage. A forgotten route meant leverage. A secret meant value.

Now men with weapons were tearing apart the docks for it.

The lantern outside guttered. Its flame stretched thin, then snapped upright.

Mara felt heat bloom under her coat.

She pulled the map free.

The paper was burning.

Not at the edges. The fire had begun in the middle, where the strange route crossed itself. A blue-white spark crawled along the ink. Mara slapped her palm over it, but the heat punched through the paper and bit her skin.

She hissed and nearly dropped it.

“What was that?” the younger smuggler called.

Mara folded the map tighter. Smoke curled up her sleeve, sharp and bitter. She shoved the burning bundle into the hollow beneath the lobster pots, but the flame flared through the folds. The hidden route shone brighter than the fire around it, each line glowing like a thread of molten wire.

The men turned.

“There!” Scar-Jaw shouted.

Mara kicked the pots aside and ran.

A bolt struck the post beside her head. Wood burst against her cheek. She ducked beneath a hanging net and sprinted toward the fish market, boots skidding on scales and rainwater.

“Cut her off!”

The dock erupted around her. Men shouted from the warehouses. A door slammed open ahead. Mara veered left, barreling between two stalls where crates of salt cod blocked the narrow passage. She climbed one, vaulted the other, and landed hard enough to jar her injured hand.

The map flared beneath her coat.

She heard a pistol crack.

The shot punched through a stack of barrels behind her. Salt spilled across the boards in a white rush.

Mara reached the end of the market and found the way barred by a canal. The waterway cut between the warehouses, black and narrow, with no bridge in sight. On the opposite side, a rusted iron gate stood beneath a stone arch marked with an old harbor seal.

The tunnels.

She had seen the seal before, half-buried beneath layers of paint on a surveyor’s plan. The route on the map had led here.

Behind her, boots thundered closer.

Mara looked at the canal. A skiff bumped against the near bank, tied by a single frayed rope. No oars. No time.

She seized the rope and swung.

Her body struck the side of the skiff. Cold water closed over one boot. She gritted her teeth, hauled herself aboard, and cut the line with the small knife at her belt. The current dragged the boat beneath the arch.

A bolt struck the stern.

“Stop!” Scar-Jaw roared.

Mara crawled toward the bow as the skiff scraped stone. The water beneath the arch was lower than it looked. Black ripples slid over the mud, carrying scraps of reed and floating candle grease. Something brushed her submerged boot.

She kicked hard.

The skiff spun. Mara caught the gunwale as another shot cracked above. A lantern smashed against the arch, showering the water with sparks. For an instant she saw the smugglers on the bank, their faces pale in the firelight.

Then the tunnel swallowed her.

The skiff slammed into a stone ledge. Mara pitched forward and struck her shoulder against the bow....
