Staying Reveals

The interview suite was colder than it had any right to be. Detective Daniel Mercer stood in the doorway working a kink out of his shoulder while, behind the glass, a clerk fought a printer that kept spitting blank pages. A buzzer chirped twice down the hall and died.

A voice came through the vent - an officer talking too fast, the way people did when a scene was already unravelling. Mercer caught fragments: partners. Stayed. Same pattern. He didn't need the rest. Another case had landed on his desk with the familiar shape of a woman who'd loved a man who was about to become evidence.

"Detective Mercer?" The clerk finally wrestled the printer into submission. A stack of folders thudded onto the tray, thick and crooked. "They're ready for you. Evidence intake's running behind - you'll want the file before you talk to her."

"Where's the witness?"

"Interview two." The clerk's eyes flicked toward the corridor, toward a door that stayed shut more than it should. "They pulled her statement. Changed it. Again."

Mercer didn't ask who they were. In this building, they was whoever had the keys and the patience to make paperwork behave.

The woman in interview two sat straight-backed, hands wrapped around a paper cup she hadn't touched, eyes fixed on the table's corner as if looking anywhere else might make the room move. When Mercer's chair scraped tile, she flinched.

"Ms. Caldwell?"

Her throat worked. "You're Daniel Mercer." She said it like she'd rehearsed it.

"I need to understand why your timeline changed."

"I told the truth."

"Then tell it again." He tapped the table once - not a threat, just an anchor. "Start with the night Lena Hart's boyfriend was arrested."

Her eyes came up. Tired, not frightened. That was its own kind of warning. "He wasn't arrested that night."

"Your statement says otherwise."

"Your file says otherwise." Her jaw set. "I'm telling you what I remember."

"You remember him being home. The television on. The neighbour's dog. Lena calling and asking you to hold the line until morning."

"I remember Lena's voice." Something sharpened in her. "I don't remember an arrest. I remember commotion, later. Officers. Shouting. But the arrest -" she swallowed - "that part's mixed up."

"Mixed up how?"

Her gaze flicked to the one-way glass. "Lena asked me to help her. She said if I told it right, no one would blame me for being there."

Something cold moved through Mercer that had nothing to do with the room's temperature. He'd heard this before - partners who dressed fear up as loyalty, who turned memory into a performance you gave for someone else's safety. "In what way did she ask you to help her?"

"She said she needed me to be consistent. That she couldn't afford to be questioned." Ms. Caldwell's eyes were wet now, and she didn't wipe them. "She said I was the only one who could make her sound sane."

Mercer let the silence hold. In training they called it the rhythm of denial - not a lie exactly, more a groove the mind wore into itself. "Did she tell you what to say?"

"She told me what not to say." Her voice dropped. "Don't mention the phone call. Don't mention the window. Don't mention the hallway."

"And you didn't."

"Because she was shaking. Because she kept saying if she lost him, she lost everything."

Mercer stood. "You're contradicting the file."

"I'm contradicting your assumptions." Her eyes sharpened. "You think I'm protecting someone. I'm protecting myself. There's a difference."

He didn't argue it. "Stay where you are. I'll need you in evidence intake - we'll compare what you said to what you signed."

Her mouth tightened. "I already signed."

"Then we'll see what you signed."

Evidence intake was louder: chairs scraping, lights buzzing, people trying to make chaos legible. A clerk in nitrile gloves slid a folder across the table like it might bite. Mercer flipped through it and stopped on a line that didn't sit right - the date stamp on Ms. Caldwell's statement sat a full day earlier than the call she'd described. The consent-form signature carried the same name in a slightly different ink.

"Who handled intake on this?" he asked.

A man near the sorting bins shrugged without looking up. "Different units."

The clerk beside him wasn't shrugging. She was avoiding, hands moving tags from pile to pile with too much care.

"Bring me Ms. Caldwell's original recording," Mercer said.

"We don't have -"

"You do. It's logged."

The clerk's eyes cut toward the back door - fear, but not of him. She led him down a side corridor to a keypad door and let him in on a breath. Inside, a rack of drives glowed. She pulled one, and her fingers brushed his and jerked back too fast.

"She said not to," the clerk whispered. "Before I could do anything. She called. Said it was confidential."

"Who called?"

"I don't know her name. She said she was helping Lena. She used a voice like she was trying to sound older than she was."

Mercer didn't ask what that sounded like....
