"Do you both affirm," the judge asked, his voice echoing off the high stone ceiling, "that there is no possibility of reconciliation?" Prem opened his mouth. He thought about the house near the hills, the unfinished dream that had become a burden. He thought about Lopita, whose name hadn't been spoken aloud in this room for two years. He thought about the way Lovely used to laugh-a full, throaty sound that had once been the only music in his life. "Yes," Prem said. The word tasted like ash. Lovely’s voice, a soft, broken reed, followed immediately. "Yes." The gavel fell-a dull thud that signalled the death of the life they had built. Prem walked out, the envelope in his hand now weighing ten times what it had when he walked in. He descended the stairs, the cool air of the evening waiting for him outside, but he felt as though he were walking into a vacuum. He pushed the main doors open. The humidity of Mumbai hit him, thick and oppressive. He didn't want to go back to his apartment-that echoing, hollow space that felt more like a warehouse of ghosts than a home. He saw Lovely standing by the curb. She was shivering, though it wasn't cold. She was a woman untethered, adrift in a city that had suddenly become foreign. He watched her hail a rickshaw. The driver, an older man with a faded scarf around his neck, pulled over. She climbed in. And then, the pride that had been his spine for two years-the ego that had demanded he be right, even if being right meant being alone-finally collapsed. He realized, with a clarity that was almost blinding, that he had spent his life proving he was right while Lovely had spent hers waiting for him to prove he loved her. He lunged toward the rickshaw just as it began to pull away. He didn't think about his legal team, or the alimony payments, or the years of wasted silence. He grabbed the metal bar of the rickshaw’s frame. The driver slammed the brakes, the tires shrieking against the wet asphalt. Lovely turned, her eyes wide, a mask of sheer panic on her face. "Prem? What are you doing?" "I don't know," he panted, climbing into the narrow cabin. "But I can't let you go. Not like this. Not again." The rickshaw jerked into gear, pulling away from the court, away from the past, and into the roaring, unpredictable heart of the city.
