The rain came down hard enough to rattle the glass, turning the streetlights outside Warren Manor into smeared gold. Inside, the air smelled like wet stone and lemon polish, the kind of clean that never quite covered the older odors underneath-burnt incense from wards that had been scrubbed away, old wood that had soaked up centuries of secrets. Piper Halliwell stood on the foyer tiles with her palms pressed to the cool banister, staring at the new brass plaque someone had bolted to the wall like it had always belonged there.

Leo Wyatt was behind her, close enough that she could feel his warmth through her damp sleeves. He didn’t speak at first. He just looked at the plaque like he was measuring how much trouble it would attract.

“It’s a name,” Piper said, voice tight. “A harmless little-”

“It’s never harmless,” Leo cut in, low. His eyes drifted to the door, to the windows, to the rain-slick street beyond. There was always a part of him that expected a curse to leak through the seams of the world. He’d lived that way long enough to hate surprises.

Piper swallowed. She could feel the counter-cure in her bones like a second heartbeat-proof that the spell had worked, proof that her body could make more magic again. It should’ve felt like relief. Instead it felt like exposure. Like the universe had just painted a target on their backs in shimmering ink.

When she turned, her hair was damp and heavy against her neck. “I want this to be normal,” she said, and hated how pleading it sounded. “Just once. No alarms. No… no notices from things that shouldn’t know where we live.”

Leo’s mouth twitched, not quite a smile. “Normal doesn’t exist in our zip code.”

“Then give me something close,” Piper said. She leaned her forehead against the banister for a second, grounding herself in wood grain and the steady thrum of her own breath. “Give me a chance to be their mother again.”

From down the hall, footsteps-light, quick-skated across the marble. A door clicked open, and the sound of a laugh spilled out, bright and careless, like it didn’t know the rain could turn into teeth.

Piper’s chest tightened at the timing of it. The laugh wasn’t hers to own. It belonged to someone who’d been born into a life that was more complicated than the word “home” could hold.

Melinda Wyatt stood in the doorway of the parlor with her sleeves rolled up, hair dark and glossy from the damp air. She looked too soft for the way the world kept trying to bite. Melinda was 100% Pure mortal despite having magical parentage, and the fact didn’t protect her from the way people watched her anyway-like mortals weren’t allowed to be bright in a place full of magic.

She glanced at Piper and Leo, then at the plaque, and her brows lifted. “So we’re officially doing the ‘rename the manor’ thing?”

Piper let out a slow breath. “It’s just paperwork.”

“It’s not just paperwork when someone bolts it to the wall,” Melinda said, stepping farther into the hallway. Her eyes flicked to Leo’s face, searching for the truth behind his silence. Then she looked back at Piper. “Are you okay?”

Piper wanted to say yes. She wanted to hand Melinda the version of herself that didn’t carry guilt like a second spine. But the guilt was there, pressing against her ribs, reminding her that Piper Halliwell/Leo Wyatt-Formerly-wasn’t a fairy tale. It was a divorce, and it had happened because Piper had been forced into a life that kept moving without asking her permission.

Leo shifted beside her, shoulders squared as if he could block the world with posture alone. “We’re fine,” he said.

Melinda’s gaze sharpened. “You’re lying.”

Piper flinched, because Melinda was good at seeing through things. That was the problem with being the kind of person other people underestimated. They always forgot mortals could still be perceptive. Melinda didn’t have magic in the way Piper and her sisters did, but she had something else-something that made her notice the tiny cracks in the air.

Piper forced her voice steady. “I’m trying to reconnect.”

Melinda blinked, then her expression softened. “With who?”

Piper’s throat tightened again. There were too many names in her head, too many faces that had grown while Piper had been busy surviving. The eldest-Phoenix Halliwell-was already old enough that her own anger had edges. Wyatt Halliwell was all restless energy and power that made the walls feel thin. Chris Halliwell lingered like a shadow with a conscience, part demigod and part elder and part witch, and he never looked at magic like it was a gift.
