Steel Vows Of The Samurai

Rain had stopped hours ago, but the ash still clung to everything like soot-skin. In the Kurogane family compound, the courtyard stones looked gray-burned, their seams packed with drifting powder that turned every footstep into a quiet grind. The village bells had only just finished their mournful toll when Daichi came back through the gate with his armor still warm from the road - too late, as if the world had decided the sound of metal and the sound of grief should collide.

He didn’t remember crossing the threshold. He remembered the yard, the way the air tasted like old smoke, and his wife’s body laid where light couldn’t quite reach. No one spoke at first. Even the birds kept their distance, startled by the sharp, broken silence that followed him. Then Haruka’s scream broke open the courtyard, thin and raw, and Daichi’s rage rose like a blade being drawn from its scabbard.

“Where are they?” he demanded, voice cracking on the last word as he knelt beside her. His fingers were steady only because they had to be. His palm pressed into cloth that had gone stiff, and the ash stuck to his skin as if it wanted to claim him too. “Tell me. Who did this.”

Haruka stood with her fists clenched so hard her knuckles were pale. Beside her, Ren kept his eyes on Daichi’s hands, like he was afraid that looking at the wound would make it worse. Their mother’s hair had come loose in the chaos, dark strands spread across the stone. Daichi didn’t notice any of it - not at first. He only heard the question echo inside his skull, the question that refused to die.

“They rang the bells,” Ren said, quiet but firm, as if quiet could keep them alive. “After… after you left.”

Daichi turned his head toward the sound, toward the empty street beyond the courtyard wall. Bells meant the village was still standing. Bells meant people had time to run, time to hide, time to decide. His jaw worked. He pulled himself upright so fast the ash puffed around his boots.

“Training,” he said. The word came out like a command to the world. “Right now.”

Haruka’s eyes snapped to him. “Father - ”

“Not later.” Daichi grabbed the hilt of his practice katana from where it leaned against the post by the well, the wood worn smooth by years of hands. His grip was too tight; the leather creaked. “If I let this sit, it rots. If it rots, it kills us all. You both stand. You both move.”

Ren swallowed. He glanced at their mother again, then at the sword. “We’re… we’re not supposed to - ”

Daichi’s gaze snapped to him, hot enough to scorch. “Supposed by who? By the men who hid while she begged for breath?” His voice dropped, rougher now, like he was forcing each syllable through teeth. “She died in our village. Someone in our village made it possible.”

For a moment the courtyard felt smaller, crowded by fear. The compound servants had drifted closer, but they kept their distance, eyes lowered. A watchman - one of the village guards who had once offered polite bows - stood at the edge of the gate, his cap in his hands. He looked like he wanted to kneel and apologize at the same time.

“Daichi-sama,” the watchman began, careful. “The attackers - ”

“They’re not attackers.” Daichi didn’t give him time to choose softer words. “They’re killers. They walked through the smoke and they knew where to find her.” He stepped forward until the ash ground under his boots. “Name anyone who had eyes on my wife.”

The watchman’s throat bobbed. “We’re trying. The village is in chaos. People are - ”

“Chaos doesn’t leave fingerprints.” Daichi’s knuckles whitened on the katana. “I’m asking for names.”

Haruka moved first, as if she could keep Daichi from tipping over the edge if she acted quickly enough. She stepped between her father and the watchman, her chin lifting. “Father,” she said, voice steadier than her hands, “we can train. But… we need rules. If you break yourself, what are we supposed to do?”

Daichi stared at her. Rage still lived in his chest, but something else pulsed under it - fear, old and sharp, the fear that his fury would swallow them. He exhaled once, hard. The sound scraped out of him.

“Rules,” he repeated. “Fine.” He lifted the katana. “No blind swings. No chasing. We practice footwork, stance, timing. Then we hunt.”

Ren finally stepped forward, his gaze as stubborn as a locked door. “Hunt who?”

Daichi’s eyes flicked, and the ash dusted his lashes. “Whoever stood close enough to watch our bell-rage and still chose to hurt her.”

The watchman flinched at the word rage, but he didn’t retreat. “There were rumors,” he admitted, and his voice fell lower. “Before the bells. Some men were seen near the granary lane. They weren’t from outside. Not the way raiders usually are.”

Haruka’s head tilted. “Our village men?”

The watchman hesitated. That hesitation was an answer. “Men who wear the same crest as those on the council ledgers,” he said finally. “But council men don’t kill like thieves. They - ”

“They do,” Daichi snapped....
