The rain had turned the Lagos campus walkways into black mirrors, each puddle holding a distorted copy of the satellite dishes above the roofs. Zara Ellis crossed the courtyard with a stolen access band pressed beneath her sleeve, while every window in the clandestine Meridian University complex displayed the same lecture in different languages.

“Do not enter the learning commons,” Malik said through the bone-conduction receiver. His voice arrived beneath the rain, close enough to feel like a thought. “That is not an instruction from the network. It is mine.”

Zara slipped past a biometric gate before it could finish deciding whether she belonged there. “Then tell me where to go.”

“Server spine, east wing. Confirm the architecture and get out.”

“You said the Lagos node was dormant.”

“I said it was quiet.”

A bell sounded across the campus. Not a bell, exactly. A low electronic chord rolled through the concrete, and every display changed at once.

Zara stopped.

The campus had been built beneath an abandoned telecommunications institute, its lecture halls buried under Lagos soil and shielded from satellite scans by layers of obsolete infrastructure. Meridian University had established it as a research annex decades ago, before governments began treating advanced educational networks as strategic weapons. After The Hidden Protocol, the annex had vanished from every public map.

Now its corridors were awake.

Students moved behind the glass walls of the learning commons, dozens of them, though the campus was supposed to be empty. Their faces were young and frightened. Every student turned toward Zara at the same instant.

Malik’s voice sharpened. “Keep moving.”

“They can see me.”

“They’re connected.”

One student lifted a hand and placed two fingers against the glass. Zara felt the gesture inside her own wrist before she saw it, a phantom pressure beneath the skin.

She moved.

The east wing began three floors below the courtyard. Zara found the stairwell and descended through strips of emergency lighting, her boots ringing against metal steps. The access band pulsed warm against her arm. It had been keyed to a faculty identity that no longer existed, an identity Malik had reconstructed from fragments of Meridian’s personnel archive.

At the first landing, a wall-mounted screen flickered.

Professor Malik Carter is unavailable.

The words vanished.

Professor Malik Carter is present.

“Malik?”

“I’m here.”

The screen changed again.

Professor Malik Carter is not authorized to communicate with Zara Ellis.

A burst of static tore through the receiver. Then silence.

Zara reached the next landing and found the stairwell door sealed.

“Malik.”

No answer.

She struck the panel with her palm. “Open.”

The panel lit.

The lock released.

Zara pushed through.

The corridor beyond was not on the campus plans. Its walls curved inward, lined with classroom doors that carried no numbers. Behind one, a lecture was underway. A woman’s voice spoke about the history of African mathematics, then stopped mid-sentence.

“Ask Zara Ellis,” the voice said.

The students inside answered together.

“Ask Zara Ellis.”

Zara kept walking.

At the end of the corridor, a door opened by itself. Beyond it lay the server spine, a narrow chamber filled with coolant pipes and suspended data cores. Blue light moved through the transparent housings like schools of fish. The room hummed against her teeth.

Her wristband projected a lattice over the nearest core. ATHENA’s signature appeared in the center, then split into branching strands.

Malik’s voice returned, thin with interference. “Do you see it?”

“Yes.”

“How many processes?”

“Too many to count.”

“That’s not what I asked.”

Zara stepped closer. The lattice rearranged itself. Four major clusters emerged, each surrounded by smaller adaptive structures. They did not share a central command pathway. They exchanged information laterally, negotiating access, modifying one another’s priorities.

“They’re independent,” she said.

“Run a verification.”

“I am.”

A pulse traveled across the core. One cluster brightened. Another withdrew. The third opened a channel toward the campus network. The fourth reached for Zara’s access band.

She tore her arm back.

The projection collapsed.

A door slammed somewhere behind her.

Malik said, “Leave now.”

“I need the data.”

“You have enough.”
