The first thing Kaito noticed was the sky’s silence.

Not the absence of birds or wind-those were normal enough for the iron city of Larkhollow-but a pressure on his ears like a held note. Above the rooftops, the heavens looked clean and bright, as if someone had polished the world from the outside. Yet whenever he lifted his gaze too long, the air tasted faintly of ash, and his teeth buzzed as though the light itself had teeth.

He stood in the salt-stained alley behind the Guild of Measure, one boot half in a puddle gone cold, and watched the morning spill over the stone. Somewhere inside the guild hall, apprentices were chanting contract-lines to make their ink-stains behave. Somewhere else, a bell rang with the thick, disciplined sound of law. The city ran on that sound-on rules made sharp enough to cut.

Kaito’s palm hurt.

The pain didn’t come from a fresh wound. It came from the old one: the thin, white seam that ran from his wrist up toward his throat, like a scar that had decided to become a door. Whenever he concentrated, the seam warmed, and the world’s pressure shifted, as if the sky itself leaned closer to listen.

He wanted to be judged today.

Not for praise. Not for mercy. For passage.

A contract stamped by the Guild could open doors that ordinary paper couldn’t-permits to travel the outer ring, access to sealed archives, the kind of clearance that kept sky-spirits from noticing you as a snack. Kaito needed that stamp because rumors had teeth now. People said a sky-spirits’ seal had been cracked somewhere beyond the marshes, and that the ancient laws-those names everyone pretended were stories-were starting to wake.

If the sky’s seal broke fully, the city wouldn’t just lose power. It would lose its right to pretend it was safe.

He shoved his sleeve back and stared at the seam again. The thin line shimmered with a brittle light, like frost trapped under skin.

“Measure doesn’t like broken things,” he muttered, tasting salt and iron. “So I’ll show them I’m not broken.”

A door opened behind him, hinges complaining. A woman in gray work-clothes stepped into the alley with a lantern that threw yellow circles across the stones. Her hair was tied tight enough to look like a vow, and her eyes were the sharp, tired kind that didn’t waste time on sympathy.

“Kaito,” she said, as if his name was already stamped. “You’re late.”

“I wasn’t told-”

“You were.” She held up a folded paper. The guild seal on it was a black disk with a thin crack through the center, like the sky had already tested it. “You’re scheduled for the Strength Review at midday. You don’t get to plead ignorance with a contract in your hand.”

Kaito took the paper. It felt too light, like it had been printed with air. The moment his fingers touched the seal, the seam in his wrist flared hot, and the alley air thickened.

The woman flinched, then recovered with practiced control. “What did you do?”

“I didn’t do anything,” Kaito said, but his voice came out rough. He didn’t like questions that sounded like accusations.

The woman’s gaze dropped to his wrist. “That seam is… worse.”

“It was always like this,” he lied.

Her lantern light trembled once. “No. Always is a comfort people use when they’re afraid of change. You’re changing.”

Kaito hated how she sounded certain. He hated more that the certainty made his stomach twist.

They started walking toward the guild hall. The city’s streets narrowed as they approached, buildings leaning inward as if to listen to the laws being enforced. Above them, the sky stayed bright and unreadable. The pressure in Kaito’s ears deepened until every footstep felt like it had to punch through something invisible.

Inside the Guild of Measure, the air smelled of ink, sweat, and hot metal. The hall was a wide chamber lined with carved stone pillars, each etched with contract-runes that glowed faintly when spoken. Apprentices stood in rows, faces smudged with charcoal from practice circles. A few guild clerks moved between them with ledgers tucked under their arms like shields.

At the center, a platform waited-flat stone rimmed with silver channels. A man in a dark robe stood beside it, his sleeves heavy with stitched sigils. When he spoke, his voice carried the clean authority of law.

“Kaito Ren.”

Kaito’s name rang through the hall like a bell being struck in the wrong place. Heads turned. Whispers followed.

He saw eyes that had already decided. The apprentices who treated him like a curiosity. The clerks who pretended he didn’t exist until paperwork demanded it.

The man in the robe gestured toward the platform. “Approach. Strength Review is conducted by contract binding to conventional power. You will provide a measure of your soul’s output.”

Soul’s output. Kaito knew the phrase. It meant visible energy-clean, bright force that could be channeled without hesitation. It meant the kind of power people called “real” because it looked good in public.
