Time Loops Of Love

The café smelled like burnt sugar and rain; steam rose from a chipped mug between them, fogging the glass that framed late-afternoon traffic. Nora watched the way Jonah's fingers tightened around the ceramic, knuckles white under a sleeve with a frayed cuff. She wanted him to apologize. She wanted the word that would erase the small betrayals he had stacked into an evening of sharp sentences and closed doors. Instead he folded his hands and looked out at the street as if the city could explain him to her.

"Maybe we shouldn't-" Jonah began, voice thin, and the rest of the sentence died on the edge of the table.

"Maybe?" Nora's laugh was brittle. She felt it like a fissure opening under her sternum. "Maybe we shouldn't what? Try? Stay? Pretend everything's fine?"

He finally looked at her. His eyes were the exact gray of the sky beyond the window, and for a second she saw the boy who had shared a beer on a rooftop and a first kiss on a rainy night. The same soft ridge of eyebrow. The same small scar at the corner of his mouth. But the man in front of her was othered by a kind of distance she hadn't earned.

"I can't do this right now," Jonah said. "I think...maybe we need space."

Space. The word landed with the weight of a closed door. Nora's stomach dropped as if the café had tilted. She wanted to grab him, to shake him into remembering the nights they'd counted heartbeats together, the mornings when his voice had been an anchor. Instead she let the coffee cup tremble, and the steam blurred the world into an impressionist smear.

She thought of breaking up. The thought was small and sharp, like a stone skipping across a pond. It didn't feel like relief; it felt procedural, a checkbox in a life that had become too loud with unmet promises. Someone dropped a spoon in the kitchen behind the counter; the sound was ordinary and obscene.

Jonah smiled then, a brittle, apologetic thing. "I don't want to make it harder," he said. "I-"

"Don't." She cut him off because she couldn't watch him dismantle them with kind words. "Don't protect me with distance. Say it if you want to leave. Say it and be done."

He stared at her, as if he were trying to decode a sentence written in a foreign script. His mouth formed a soundless syllable, then another, and the café's low hum pressed in around them. Tears rose hot and swift to her eyes. She swallowed them back ferociously. There had to be a way to make him feel the same fear she was feeling.

Jonah drew a breath and stood up so suddenly his chair scraped. "If that's what you want," he said. "If breaking up is what you want-"

"I didn't say that," Nora snapped, but the words vanished. He was already walking away, shoulders square in a steady retreat. People in the café glanced up then down, caught in their own orbits, ignorant of the small planet tilting between them.

He reached the door and didn't look back. The bell chimed. The world folded.

When the bell faded, the streetlight outside flared, and the café's clock rewound without a sound.

Nora's heart stuttered. The mug in front of her was full again, steam curling, untouched. Jonah sat across from her as if no time had passed, as if his back had not been turned to her ten seconds ago. He smiled that same half-apology, but this time his eyes held something different: a clean, unknowing blank. He clicked his fingers and frowned, like someone trying to remember a name.

"Do I know you?" he asked, and the question was simple and stunned in its innocence.

Everything in Nora's ribs reconfigured. She remembered: the apartment keys he'd lost, the first argument about moving in together, the way he'd hummed to himself while making breakfast. She remembered the knot that had formed in her chest the instant he said "space," the exact trajectory of his leaving. Memory poured through her like a tide, full and indisputable. Jonah's face, however, was the surface of a lake that had never seen a stone.

"No," she lied, because the truth felt like a confession that might break him. She watched him, cataloguing details she had never needed before-the freckle near his left ear, the soft callus on his thumb where a guitar pick had worn the skin, the scent of cedar and rain that clung to his jacket.

He looked at her as if seeing a stranger in a familiar place. "I'm sorry," he said, and he meant it without history, an apology from a man who did not know the offense.

Nora's breath came shallow. She wanted to tell him everything, to dump the ledger of small grievances and better memories onto the table and let him choose which ones to keep. Instead she let herself be polite with a careful, aching cordiality. "It's okay," she said, and the words were a talisman she did not understand how to use.

Outside, a bicycle bell chimed, bright and ordinary. The world moved on, ignorant of the breach between two people who had once been fluent in each other's silences. Nora's mind raced to fill in the gaps....
